As you may be able to tell, I am brand new to the forum. I've been searching around for a while, but haven't found an answer to my question.

My Current Setup:
- Amp: Sony STR-DE695
- Fronts: Boston VR1's
- Center: Boston VRC


What sub would pair well with my setup.

Welcome to the forums! I'm a newbie here also. How big is your room and your wallet? How big a box do you want in your corner? Have you listened to anything you like on a system like yours that had a sub?

How tall is your ceiling in that room? The volume of the room is important.

Internet-direct brands that get recommended around here are SVS (svsound.com), Hsu (hsuresearch.com), Onix (av123.com), and Axiom (axiomaudio.com) - there are others, but they aren't coming to mind at the moment.

A good step is to e-mail those places and ask them which of their subs would work well in your room. I'm more familiar with SVS (on paper...I'm still waiting for first SVS to be delivered), and I believe that they have some units that will suit your room and your budget.

SVS has a b-stock 20-39PCi right now for $549. Don't know if a cylinder sub fits with your decor and WAF needs, but they are kinda cool to look at and take up less floor space than the big box subs do!

Hi all,
Thanks for all the replies, I really appreciate it. My other question is how to hook up subs to my amp.

My amp, Sony STR-DE695 has two options both are single cable connections:
1) Multi Channel single subwoofer
2) Single Subwoofer pre-out

The SVS, although it has both a left and a right line-level input, will work fine if you plug the cable into just one of them - at least, I'm pretty sure about that...you can check the owner's manual or just ask SVS. You can also always get a y-adapter and split the single cable into two connectors and plug into both the left and right inputs on the sub. Same goes for other subs.

The "Multi Channel single subwoofer" might be an input. Just a note for you to check on that, as I haven't downloaded a picture of your receiver.

For that price and size, you'd want to stick with SVS and Hsu. Axiom doesn't get decent until the EP500, and AV123 use mostly sealed units, which won't have the necessary output for a room of that size.

One not asked that is muchly needed, is the use? Do you want the sub for music, movies, games, karaoke, all?

I am in the same boat you are. I have the same square foot room you have but I have an 18 ft ceiling not 8.I have talked to both HSU and SVS via e-mail. Both were helpful, SVS somewhat more helpful. SVS recommended the PB10_NSD. He said for the size it would be perfect. He did say though if I wanted some more umph in my bass I should get the PB12_NSD. It has 50% more power. The only difference between YOUR setup and mine is where the sub will go. For me that PB10_NSD is good because it will sit only about 4 to 5ft away from me. HSU recommended the VTF-2 MK3 or the VTF-3 MK3.
