Just bought an iPhone only to find out that this thing won't except my etymotic ER-6 headphones or my Ultimate Ears Pro 5's. This is very disappointing! I have $450.00 worth of headphones I can't use with my state of the art iPhone! This thing is going back!

I think I read on CNET that you have to buy an adapter. Don't quote me but you should check it out before returning it. Or you could sell it on Ebay. They said on one of those morning shows that they were being sold for a few thousand.

You can get 450 minutes, unlimited data, Visual Voicemail, 200 SMS text messages, roll-over minutes and unlimited mobile-to-mobile calling for 60 bucks a month. That's unlimited internet. I don't know if anyone else is offering unlimited internet included in all their plans but I had a Blackberry two years ago and the base minimum plan I could get was just over $100 per month with no internet included.
If you can use bluetooth or connect with a cable you could link up to your laptop or desktop and browse the internet with your computer as well as your phone (You're phone would replace your modem). This means that once AT&T gets speeds up a little higher I can tell Cox communications to take their extremely over-priced internet service and shove it. Man that would feel great. I would rub it in Cox Communications' face so bad. They've been ripping me off for so long, I pay over $100 per month for internet service and the cheapest cable plan you can get. I don't know how they can justify that. I can't get satellite cause I'm in an apartment building and there is no other provider in my town.
I hope AT&T's internet speeds can be improved quick.

Yes I found the adaptor. Thanks God!

You need a special adapter to use normal headphones?

Some random words that come to mind: sad, pathetic and stupid.

That just amazes me. There was a kid in line on Friday night that got interviewed on the news, and he said that he was going to put it up for sale on eBay. However, all three of the Apple stores around here still have them in stock, and I don't know how many AT&T stores still have them.

BTW, congrats on finding the adapter! I'm amazed that you'd need one, but maybe the second gen iPhone will let people plug in headphones. :)

Ok, I just have to ask. What kind of adapter is necessary?

Is it that the iPod uses a non-standard 2.5 mm jack when headphones use 3.5 mm or the larger 1/4" plug?

The headphone socket is a standard 1/8" type. But they mounted it deep in a small diameter recess slightly larger than the jack opening itself. Pretty much no standard headphone will connect as a result. The adapter is essentially a short extension. A male 1/8" plug(with very small diameter male housing to fit in the recess) and, a few inches of cable, and then a standard 1/8" male jack on the end.

Awesome. Nothing like requiring the consumer to buy a 'special' cable that can only be purchased from Apple.

Actually, I think the cable is marketed by Belkin, not Apple.

But is it not odd that Belkin had the product ready for launch with the iPhone? Did Apple specifically give the specs to Belkin prior to release as part of a business deal?

I don't know of a cell phone that doesn't require an adapter in order to plug standard headhpones into it. My Motorola KRZR came with an adapter that plugs into the USB port. Most other phones I've seen have 2.5mm jacks.

Why is it so difficult to put a standard jack on a cell phone?

Seems to me that Apple should have either engineered the iPhone to accept ordinary headphone plugs or should have included an adapter with the phone. After all, they are marketing it as part iPod.

The problem with marketing it with the more standard size 3.5mm jack is that it will severely limit the variety of headsets with mics that you can use with it. It is a phone after all.

I did get the chance to actually play with one today. I have a client who is a Apple lover and he swung by the Apple store in the Northern VA area to pick up an AppleTV for his home theater setup.

While there he asked about how long the wait was for an iPhone and was promptly told that they had plenty of them in stock and ready to go.

So, he bought one.

It was very intuitive to use and the five minutes or so that I played with it was very interesting.

I can see them needing to up the memory in that thing really quick though. They have 32 GB CF cards now, I think that they will be coming out with more memory friendly models before long for sure.

No. Belkin has a bunch of psychics working for them. LOL :D
And, they are the genuine ones, no guessing involved.

No kidding. I am glad microsoft brought the IBM PC platform (and its clones) into the mainstream instead of apple. Apple is exactly like I have heard many people describe bose: They fix the prices of their products to be very high, and then manufacture them out of cheap components. This is why the ipods had such huge problems with getting scratched, and the batteries used to always die prematurely, and from what I understand the DAC's in them are relatively crappy. But oh, to the apple fanboys they were just the perfect little creation.

If the mac was the dominant platform today, practically nobody could buy decent rigs, or build uber gaming and HTPC setups without paying a fortune. Microsoft just has a monopoly in the OS department - apple would have a mopoly on your entire computer.
