I am assisting a friend with his theater. Unfortunately, he went ahead and had line placed and the drywall done prior to discussing with me. The contractors ran what looks like a coax cable for the subwoofer (there is not connector on either end at this time). Should I suggest that he have an actual sub cable fished (this would be costly at this point), or are there connectors and tools that he could purchase that we could get a good connection the coax line already in place?

Thanks.

I believe a good 75 ohm coax cable with rca terminations and good shielding is all that you need.

Jay,

Coax cable will work just fine. I'm assuming it's probably RG-6. He'll just want to terminate each end with an RCA connector if he'll be running the wire directly to the sub and amp. There are also wall plates for this application. I don't have a link to the tools and connectors right off hand, but you should be able to find some with Google. I think that Parts Express is a place that I saw pointed out on this forum for this exact sort of thing.

I used all Niles when I wired my first house. If it bothers him, run an expensive cable, but he might not hear much of a difference.

How long is that piece of wire? I'm a Amatuer Radio buff so I'm into cables :p and attenuation could come into play here. Just a thought.

That's how my house was wired too. I had the rg-6 coax terminated with F-connectors and then use F to RCA adapters. You can choose to terminate it directly with RCA connectors if you'd like.

Searc the forums for F to RCA and you should find a post by me where I gave the links to PartsExpress for the parts I used.
