I can't spend over $300 on a sub.

Which would you choose with the AV123 x series speakers?

AV123x-sub for $200 or Infinity PS-12 for $300?

Maybe you like something else for $300 ;-)

I would look for a pre/owned SVS PB10-ISD, or a Rocket UFW-10 if you can find one.

Lets take one step back, how big is your room, since that matters.

If you are after depth and you have a large room, the X-sub probably isn't the one.

Living room is 20' x 28' with ceiling height starting at 10' & peaking in the middle at 11'. Dining room is at one end & takes up 11' with a tile floor. The main TV viewing area is 20' x 17' and all carpet.

Big room. I don't think one X-sub will deliver stellar performance in a room that size, and the Infinity might be pushing it as well to be honest. I had the PB-10 in a 19x20 room with a high vaulted ceiling and it held its own very well. So if it is reference levels and routinely listen at elevated levels, then I'd be looking for something more along the lines of the PB-10 at the very least with a room that size. Keep an eyeball on SVS's B-stock page too as you can find some good deals there.

Wow, mazer, you WERE paying attention!

How about a pre-owned HSU Electronics STF-3?

STF-3 won't go as low as the PB-10, but it should be able to handle that room.

What is the largest size room you'd want to put an x-sub in BTW?

Someone is offering me an AV123 Onix Rocket ULW-10 for $275. Do you think my room is too big for it too?

Mine is in an 18x14 room and does a pretty good job, especially with music...songs like NIN "Burn" will shake you 10' away from the sub.

The only "issue" it has is with loud explosions, the very low stuff comes out mostly as port noise, but with most movies there is enough going on to even mask that.

It is a very capable sub for $199 and there are a lot of people using them in rooms as big as mine.

OTOH I tried it downstairs in my 24x16.5 theater and it disappeared completely.

As for the 10" Velcro...Dont think its enough either...being sealed it doesnt offer real high output.

Maybe the 15" Dayton Subwoofer kit would work for this large room.
Dayton 15" Subwoofer Kit

It is going to be almost $300 after shipping and only requires assembly, which doesn't entail much.

Yes, "Burn" on the NIN DVD has a lot of bass. The original recording of the song "Burn" doesn't have much in the bass department.

I don't know about the AV123x sub, but I can tell you that the
Infinity PS-12 is a strong sub. It hits hard and low. I had mine in
a 16' x 19' room with 10' ceiling and it absolutely can slam out some
bass. May not be the most accurate sub on the market, but you can do
FAR worse and spend more and not get the same level of bass this thing
can put out. The bass is pretty tight for a relatively inexpensive sub.
One thing to remember though, is that this model has been discontinued, so
be careful where you buy. You may be getting a used sub, even though
i'm sure you can still find new, in the box on this item for a while longer.

It is even better in Dolby True HD on the BluRay :D

UFW-10 is also a sealed sub, IIRC, so while it will probably be OK in the room too, it isn't going to dig deep either. I'd say the STF-3 would be a better choice. The Dayton 15" kit isn't a bad idea either, it also isn't tuned to go low, but it will likely have the most output (not necessarily the best sound) of any of the subs mentioned for the price.

In view of the large room, I appreciate you guys steering me away from the x-series.

I should tell you that I just got a pre-owned set of four AV123 RS550 Mark II speakers and RSC200 center channel. Since I got such a deal on them, I've upped the sub budget to about $500 now (I'd like to keep the receiver below $500 too, but I understand that you have to get a receiver to appropriately "drive" your sub?).

Also, this system will be for HT 99% of the time. Music is a minimal consideration here. Are these recommendations still valid with this new info?...

The SVS PB-10 is probably to top performer, and the Dayton Kit is probably the loudest and best bang for buck, IMO. If you do get the Dayton could you do a mini-review of the subwoofer, I would be very interested to hear from someone how it performs.:)

I have an Infinity PS-12 and it did go low and loud, before the amp went south. I really like that sub, and will have it fixed. Replaced with a Veledyne MiniVee. No comparison.

But lets remember that Infinty is owned by Harmon International, parent to the likes of JBL, Jbl Pro, Crown Amps, etc. I think the PS-12 is great sub for the money. It blows away my older M&K MX 200 under certain conditions.

Your receiver shouldn't drive your sub. The amplifier in the sub itself will do that for you. The key is to find the right frequency to set your sub crossover to make the most out of the mains and the sub.

With a $500 budget on the receiver, it would be pretty tough to beat this:

althought I would personally go more with something less "integrated" and a little more beastly (but slightly over the budget)..
