I have the Onkyo 604 with the Fluance AV-SC Center and a pair of the Fluance AV-F3 Towers. (I will add the Fluance AV-BP2 Sattilites once I get the extra $100 :( ). I want to add an inexpensive but decent quality sub. I have been suggested the Velo VX-10 , Velo VRP1000 , AV123 X-Sub , HSU STF-1 , BIC V80 , orEither Fluance Sub

So just give me your vote and reason... Thanks!

P.S. I estimate the room is 15x 10 but isn't closed off... Here's the plan...

I don't want to shake the walls but I would like as good quality as I can get.

Without any question, you should get the Parts Express 15" subwoofer kit, no question at all. It is only 249.00 plus approximately $40 for shipping, awesome deal. I would buy it, but I don't have the money right now. It should be very simple to put together, easier than an entertainment center.:D

Dayton DSUBK-15

Good luck.:)

I'd vote for the Hsu VTF2-MK2. At $399 it's a pretty good deal and you won't have to get rid of a piece of furniture in order to fit it in your room :)

I agree with abboudc. For under $500, this is a great sub. I also vote for the Mission 700AS, in this price class.

Here is a link that may help. Just pick one as high up the list that you can afford. If you give us a budget, we can narrow it down even further.

Some of the subs you listed where over your budget, We sorta thought you could push the envelope a little. If you can push $90 more you can land a very high output Dayton sub. I am really pushing this, because A.) I think I would make for a nice review and B.) I think that it would be a very kick-butt sub for the money. The original price was supposed to be $519, so the $250 plus about 40 for shipping seems like a great deal. The only catch is you have to put the woofer and amp in the enlosure and connect the speaker leads to the woofer from the amp.

You can scrape the last $90 somehow, I know I could, and likely would.:D

X-sub from av123 or Bic100.

No other contenders in that price range hands down.

$200 just is not a lot of money for a subwoofer. Components come and go but quality speakers and subwoofers will last you a long time. I would save up some more money and pop for $500 subwoofer when you have the money together. Otherwise, you will just be disappointed and will soon get the urge to spend more money upgrading.

The only BIC sub I would get is the Acoustech H100.

In this price range the subs from Dayton Audio are a good choice. The Hsu you mentioned will also be great.

As for what other people are recommending, I just think they are a little out of line with the rest of his system and his budget. I mean sure an SVS sub will be sweet but it will cost more than all his other speakers combined and is out of his price range. Of course the other argument is that if you spend the cash for a real good sub (like an SVS or Hsu) then you can upgrade the rest of your system later and not have to worry about ever replacing the sub (unless you start to go bass crazy and want even more, but IMO it is usually not needed).

I own the VX-10 and while its great for the price (160.00) from authorized dealers, it does not fill in my 15x19 room very well. My bro in law liked mine so much though that he went and bought the same one and his room is considerably smaller and he enjoys it.

If you're a real enthusiast for good clean bass then I would follow the recommendations of most people here and save up for something better. If your just interested in filling in the low end of your speakers and aren't after the science, wonder, and awe of nice, clean, low bass then get one of your budget subs, it should do just fine.

This is totally true. In my world view there are basically three tiers of subs.

At the bottom you have real crap that does not really even go low, just creates more noise in the 60-100Hz range. Really only useful for explosions when all your other speakers are kinda small. These are the ones you find for under a hundred bucks. You could also say the "bass modules" people have with some HTIB sets fall into this category.

Then you have the decent budget subs, priced in the 100-250 range where now they will go a bit lower make nice LFE for movies but may have a bit of port noise (not all, the good ones should not have this problem) and are not a real tight, refined bass. For most consumers they really don't need anything more than this. You should be able to fill a decent sized room with bass.

Then above this range you have the subs that will go really low (low 20s and below) and have tons of power (you don't turn the gain past half way because it is too insanely loud). You also get tight bass and no port noise.

So keep this in mind when people start talking about how budget subs suck (usually talking about the second category). It is very possible that a sub in the second category will do exactly what you need. Sure you can get a better sub that will go louder, lower, and tighter but you have to look at your whole setup. For me my Dayton Audio 12" sub is fine for my current setup, sure I want a better sub but I would rather upgrade some other components first.

Just remember. That is your Opinion. Everyone is aloud to have an opinion.

And in your previous post I see you stated, "As for what other people are recommending, I just think they are a little out of line with the rest of his system and his budget".

I didn't see any recommendations out of line?

Yes, and I was actually referring to my own setup, not the OP's.

Well the most expensive sub the OP was originally considering was the HSU at $300. Later he said his budget was $200. My comment was mostly directed at the suggestion to get an SVS PB12/2; a truly great sub by all accounts however I believe it sells for more than 5 times the OP's budget.

The main point I was trying to make was that while "budget" subs like he is looking for will not be able to hold a candle to the good subs in the $500-1500 price range they are actually quite capable to doing the job of kicking out bass.

I would hope that someone would know that a $200 sub is not going to perform like a $1500 sub. Just because it's called a subwoofer doesn't mean your going to get the same performance. I think that's a given fact, I hope.

I just auditioned the x-sub a few weeks ago. No it's not going to rattle your seat. But in a small room it will make a difference with your listening experience with a set of bookshelfs.
