Hi, all. For years, I've thought about hooking up some unused speakers of mine to an unused amp and seeing how they'd fare as a "subwoofer". I've put it off because I'm lazy, but I got inspired today because I've read about some people doing that exact same thing on this forum over the past couple of weeks. Anyway, I had some fun trying it out and just thought that I'd share.
Below is a picture of my Yamaha RX-V992 connected to my old trusty Realistic Mach Two speakers. Nice 15" woofers to get the job done. Yeah, I took the grills off for that "wow" factor.
Somewhat to my surprise, they performed pretty well. Below is a plot of some frequency response measurements. I measured the frequency response of my sub at my primary seating position (B&W ASW1000, blue line), and then did the same for the pictured set-up (green line). Because I didn't do a real thorough job of setting the output level on the new configuration, I arbitrarily shifted the results up (red line) to match the peak of the B&W curve at 56 Hz just to see how the curve shapes matched up. Yes, yes...I should do something about my room acoustics. That said, the Mach Two's seemed to measure up fairly closely to the B&W, and I wonder how they'd fair if they were in the corner where the B&W is (it's sitting behind the speakers in the photo). I suspect that the corner placement is causing the hump between 20 and 38 Hz for the B&W.
Well, that's all. Perhaps the picture will bring back some memories to anyone else who grew up with Radio Shack gear.
