Hi, all. For years, I've thought about hooking up some unused speakers of mine to an unused amp and seeing how they'd fare as a "subwoofer". I've put it off because I'm lazy, but I got inspired today because I've read about some people doing that exact same thing on this forum over the past couple of weeks. Anyway, I had some fun trying it out and just thought that I'd share.

Below is a picture of my Yamaha RX-V992 connected to my old trusty Realistic Mach Two speakers. Nice 15" woofers to get the job done. Yeah, I took the grills off for that "wow" factor. :)

Somewhat to my surprise, they performed pretty well. Below is a plot of some frequency response measurements. I measured the frequency response of my sub at my primary seating position (B&W ASW1000, blue line), and then did the same for the pictured set-up (green line). Because I didn't do a real thorough job of setting the output level on the new configuration, I arbitrarily shifted the results up (red line) to match the peak of the B&W curve at 56 Hz just to see how the curve shapes matched up. Yes, yes...I should do something about my room acoustics. That said, the Mach Two's seemed to measure up fairly closely to the B&W, and I wonder how they'd fair if they were in the corner where the B&W is (it's sitting behind the speakers in the photo). I suspect that the corner placement is causing the hump between 20 and 38 Hz for the B&W.

Well, that's all. Perhaps the picture will bring back some memories to anyone else who grew up with Radio Shack gear.

Funny, I did try a variation of this. I have some old Sansui SPZ-7 speakers with 15" woofers, but a couple of other drivers in the cabinet are blown. I also have an old Technics SA-EX500.

I split the sub-out line of my Denon AVR-686 into two lines and ran them as L/R into the Technics and hooked up the Sansui's to the Technics as usual. Because I only fed the below 80Hz signal to the Technics, only the woofers got a signal and I had quasi-dual subs w/about 100wpc available. It sounded ok too.

Let's have a toast to recycling.

Dave, cheers! Glad to hear that you had luck with this, also. I forgot to mention how I hooked it all up, but I did it exactly the same way that you described it.

hmmm, this is a good way to use those old school speakers of mine with 10" woofers...

I did that too!

Mine were only 12” woofers, and I didn’t co-locate them, but the bass distribution was fantastic, and the response was flatter then with my single sub… the extension wasn’t as good, though.

Always great to see someone trying something creative. :)

….and you need to do something about your room acoustics. ;)

LOL.... That looks like a fun experiment:D

Needless to say, you'll be one happy camper when your PC-Ultra arrives!!

What?! You think the PC-Ultra will do better? :D

Yeah, I can't wait for that thing!!! Oh, baby. Another month and a half...or so...
