Hi, how does this reciever rate among others in its price range? Does the quality of the speakers I hook up to it matter more than the quality of the reciever?

How do definitive technology or focal simba speakers rate? I can get the 5 sattelite and subwoofer for $800 for the definitive technology, or I can get the focal for 1000(Same number of speakers). Any recommendtations? I am using a 40 samsung LCD and a pioneer 1080p upconverting dvd player. Thanks.

Edit: Forgot this, what kind of speaker wire is good? My entire house is tiled and the room which this will be in will have vaulted ceilings and some walls are missing(it isnt a square).

In this setup, is it better to have the speakers on stands or mounted on the walls or does it not matter.

HT System.

I am not familar with the deftech sub/sat system, but the Yamaha 661 should be more than adequate for those speakers. If you go with satellite speakers, consider an entry level receiver in the $2-300 range like the Yamaha RX-V659 or a lower end model.

For $800-1000, you can get a quality 5.1 bookshelf speaker system. The SVS 5.1 system in white and silver are currently on sale for $800. Also AV123 X-series speakers would be a good option in your price range and they offer real wood veneer. If bookshelf speakers are too low on WAF, you might consider in-wall and in-ceiling speakers.

Also, buy a few rugs and other furnishings to tame the acoustics in your tile rooms.

I have the 661 and I absolutely love it. I got tired of waiting on the 861 and the Onkyo 805, so I pulled the trigger, and I'm definitely glad I did. It had plenty of power to drive my speakers before I bought my Acurus.

I think it's a great little receiver for the money. Sure there are better receivers out there, but how many have the features and quality of the Yamaha for under $400?
