Original Sony Playstation - Audiophile dream system?

I was wondering if anyone could back the claims up that the first edition PS1 (model # SCPH-1001) sound quality is really equal to that of a $6000 system.
This rumor has been around for a while, but recently it was announced on G4 (gaming television) that the PS1 was an amazing cd player because of the dedicated RCA jacks on the back of the original.

Really, I'd like to see a review of the system to see if it is up to snuff.
Here's a link to the clip from Attack of the Show on G4:

A link to how much some are being listed on ebay (this one is $2500):

They do sell for A LOT LESS than that on ebay, but a few have sold for over $2500. Some have gone for less than $100 as well.

Here is a web site that speaks of the sound quality:

Hope someone has experience with it already, I look forward to your responses.

Sounds kind of stupid to me. CD technology is old enough to there is no need to spend that kind of money on a player unless you have $200k speakers and more money than god.

Utter bunk - same as the people trying to say that some of the cheap-o $200 Panasonic receivers are audiophile products. We listened to one... and we measured it... it was awful. Some people like a good story and they WANT to believe these kinds of things.

It's beyond stupid - just use common sense and look at the components they use to make the stuff.

Perhaps the $6000 system used for comparison was from Bose... :)

Does "cult following" mean the same thing for consumer electronics that it does for movies? (ie. Nobody actually bought one).

Looking at it from a semi-engineering standpoint, I can’t fathom how such a thing would happen. By accident.
And it would have been by accident, because the PS1 is a gaming device, so that’s what the design team’s absolute priority would have been; same with a multi-thousand dollar CD player (assuming you get what you pay for), its sole purpose is to play CD’s, being very very good at anything else would be by accident.

Unlike all "cult following" movies the PS1s are all in circulation, so the only people that lose are the manufacturers of "real" high end CD players, because the person that gets the PS1 thinking it will be the greatest CD player ever, will probably think it sounds better than anything they have ever heard, if they believe it.:D

Yes, if I got a new Jolida CD player and it played DVDs or PS1 games really well, I would be very impressed, and I would not be able to bring myself to believe such a silly thing.:D
