There is a hugh difference in a 7.1 system with receiver and a 5.1 system for $2000 and receiver.

How can he get any recommendations???
Sorry. Just trying to add some info. A recommendation that I made over there was for a 7.1 receiver (Onkyo 505) and a 5.1 speaker set (av123 or SVS), which fits the goal of 5.1 now with a possible upgrade to 7.1 later. Others suggested other 5.1 speaker sets. The added budget allows for an upgrade in components, for example from the Onkyo 505 to the 805.

I've been looking at AV123 and SVS speakers. What do you guys think about them?

SVS
SCS-01 Speaker Package - $740
SCS PB12-NSD Subwoofer - $600

AV123
5 x-cs - $700
Rocket UFW-10 Subwoofer - $600

I think one thing you dont entirely realize is you do not need a matching subwoofer. If you go with av123 I would still get an hsu or svs subwoofer.

Personally I perfer av123 speakers over SVS but that just comes down to auditioning the speakers.

Get in my car?
Sorry if my post was not as clear as it could be. What I was trying to say is "get in your car with your favorite CD and go to all the local AV stores and audition as many speakers as you can that are in your price range." Good luck with your search!

I wish I could but there are not many AV stores around me. Around me is Fry's, Best Buy, Circuit City, etc. I've heard the speakers they have in their stores but it seems over priced and I feel like I can get a much better system from somewhere else.

Seriously, in an 9x9 room, I don't think you need any more sub than a Hsu STF-2. Take the money you save and get better speakers.

In a 9x9 room, there's no reason for tower speakers, or for that matter, large bookshelves. You can get by with something like HSU's Ventriloquist setup, and an HSU STF sub, along with an Onkyo 605. That system will blast you out of a 9x9x8 room (648 cu/ft).

You can get great 14ga. speaker wire in the automotive dept. at Walmart in 50' runs for under $12, and very good quality component cables at Home Depot for under $15.

HDMI is used to connect a DVD player or HD cable box to your receiver, and another HDMI cable from your receiver to your flat screen HD tv.

Take the extra $900 and buy yourself a new Olevia 37" flat screen LCD and HD DVD player from Buy.com or Amazon.com ;)

HSU Ventriloquist 5.0 $299
HSU STF-2 $349
Onkyo 605 at JR.com $399
Cables $50

Total $1097

I still think it would be worthwhile to get decent bookshelves over the Ventriloquist system.

I've got the Ventriloquist system in an 11x11 bedroom and I would not recommend it, especially not for somebody that's comfortable with a 2K budget.

If I were building the best sounding (to me) system for a small room, I'd start with a Yamaha HTR-6060 (best bang for the buck receiver), 2 Era D4 Satellites as mains, Era D3 LCR for center, Era D3 satellites for surrounds and the HSU STF-2.

I don't know how this system would play out budget-wise, but it would likely be close to $2K and I can't imagine ever second guessing my choice or suffering buyer's remorse.

Here's the Era spec page.

I totally agree. It has nothing to do with his room size. Sound quality is everything.

And for what bookshelf's, and stands would run, the OP could have the X-series floorstanders. They would take up nearly the same amount of a footprint. So I don't see the problem?

But maybe I'm wrong. That is why this is an information board. So we could all learn. :D

OK guys, I know I have a really small room, but I don't really care. I love listening to music loud in my room and just have all that bass hit you in the chest, I don't feel like I would achieve that with small speakers. Now I know you guys say that I will get that chest hitting bass with small systems but it's just not the same.

As of right now, I'm leaning toward two AV123 x-mtm for mains, AV123 x-cs for the center, and two AV123 x-ls for the surround. I'm not too sure about the receiver but I'm thinking about some Onkyo receiver. What do you guys think?

Again I know this setup is really overkill for my room space, but I just care about sound quality and feeling all the sound as well.
