From what I ahve been told I could use a HDMI switch for my problem but how? I have an AV Receiver (Yamaha 661) with 2 HDMI inputs. I have 3-4 HDMI devices to connect ( Ps3 , HD DVD, Direct TV HD receiver and upconverion DVD. How?

I wanted to know if it is possible to use a HDMI switch to connect the devices to and then into the receiver and out to the TV. if so do you have to also connect some form of audio line to the receiver form each device also. If not would you have to connect each device separately to the swirtch, send the switch to the TV and then have the TV go out to the Receiver. In this case, I would also guess some form of audio out to the receiver is required but would it be from the TV to the receiver or from each individual device to the receiver. :eek:

Thanks :eek

Thanks :eek:

HDMI spec caries audio/video over one cable.
True, but not all devices support all forms of audio. In this case a HDMI switch should be nothing more than a pass thru, so yes it should work fine for both audio and video. I just received mine from Monoprice last night; haven't installed it yet, but it seems pretty decent. Going to try it out tonight.

One question Hondo, if you have an HD-DVD player and the PS3, why do you need an upconverting DVD player? Seems pointless, as both the PS3 and the HD-DVD players are upconverting players.

HDMI Connections

Hondo,
Does your TV have more than 1 HDMI port?

If so, I would connect the following:
HD-DVD and BlueRay -> Receiver -> TV HDMI 1
Other Sources -> HDMI Switch -> TV HDMI 2
To get audio from the "Other Souces" use a digital optical or coax from the TV's audio output to one of the inputs on the receiver.

If you are don't need a standard DVD player, you could also use component video for the cable box and connect Digital Optical or Coax to the receiver.

If your TV only has one HDMI input, I would put the HDMI swith between the sources and one of the receivers HDMI inputs.

Get an HDMI switch with an IR remote and buy a Harmony or URC remote so you can program macros to swith the audio and video sources.

Get an HDMI 4 port switch with remote control:

PS/3, HD-DVD, DVD w/up conversion, HD Dish-> HDMI Switch-> Input 1 on the Receiver->TV.

Does your particular receiver do any up conversion?

All these sources will pass the audio through to the receiver where it will decode and play back the stream correctly.

I have an HTPC with DVD/HD-DVD/QAM-Analog and FM Tuner Section so the HTPC effectively acts as a switch with audio handled automatically by my receiver.

I love it. Killer media server.

I'll post an article with diagrams about this type of setup shortly... It's a common issue with many people, so it shoudl be addressed "officially"... Thanks!
