Prices drop fast.. I paid 399 for this a few weeks ago.

Note to those interested - I puchased mine with a new tv after reading great reviews on it. I possibly got a lemon, but at least once per movie, the dvd player will drop the audio when it switches chapters. I have to rewind to the start of the chapter for it to pick the audio up again. I plan on returning it and waiting until the newer models are reduced in price.

Making matters worst, our CDN dollar is at its highest level in years. This still doesn't make a hill of beans difference.

From all that I have read, the Toshibas are good upconverting players.

I've never used or seen an Oppo, but I can tell you it upconverts 10x better then my Zenith upconverting DVD player ever did.

Yes.. This is supposedly a great player though and got great reviews even when it was $500, so you may want to take a chance with one.. I dunno. I took mine back today and will wait until I return from overseas and purchase a newer model.

I ordered the Toshiba HD A2 from Amazon when it was $237.88. I bought Million Dollar Baby. I don't know exactly when the HD A2 will be delivered, however, I can wait a week or two.

I am looking at deepdiscount.com for some bargains on both SD DVDs and HD DVDs. They have a 20% off sale until about the middle of June.

Ive got an A1 and it does an awesome job upconverting, much better even than the 970 I bought my father.

But you you are getting even closer in price. You could take the five free HD movies from Toshiba and sell them on eBay and recoup almost $100 of the original purchase price of the A2. Then the A2 becomes less expensive and can still do HD.
