Want a new receiver... :)

Hey all, I am thinking of a new receiver due to the new technologies out. Owever I have a bit of a quandary. My TV, which I am happy with… does not have HDMI. It is a 1080i CRT projection TV with a good picture. I just would like to be able to use the “PCM” audio and what not, and it appears that my receiver cannot (I did try it).

I currently have a Harmon Kardan AVR-235. I currently watch Blu-rays off my PS3 via component, with optical to the receiver for sound.

So my top want is PCM 7.1 support (want DTS-HD). My number two, if it is even possible, would be HDMI to the receiver, with conversion to component for video from a variety of sources.

So… thoughts? Am I screwing up anywhere here?

Thanks all!

I am not sure there is anything that can be done without upgrading the TV as well. I don't think the PS3 will output HDMI and Component at that same time.

It wont. But I keep hearing from people that the optical audio doesn;t have the bandwidth for the current 7.1 audio formats. Don't know if it is correct, but if I could convert in a reciever from hdmi to component... all would be good.

Sorry, I meant to tell you that Toslink will not handle 7.1 LPCM or any LPCM beyond 2 channel stereo. I don't think it is a bandwidth issue, but more a copyright issue. I think the coaxial interface has enough bandwidth to do it. SPDIF interface (toslink and coaxial are the two most common connections for SPDIF) will only do 2 channel PCM and bitstream Dolby/DTS up to 6.1.:(

I don't know of a receiver that does anything like this, I don't think HDMI interface allows for that period.

Well then, I need HDMI for audio only (and this can be done it appears).

Dude!!!!

You're in luck. The Yamaha 661 has exactly what you are looking for! I have my PS 3 going to the 661 via HDMI for the lossless PCM tracks. Then I've got HDMI-to-DVI going to the TV. But you can use the component outs from the 661 to go to your TV.

And to top it all off, you can find the 661 online for under $400!!!

All but that his TV does not support HDMI interface, which is a pretty important factor. He won't be able to utilize HDMI unless he gets a different television.

Um, why do I need to use HDMI to my TV if it can output component simultaneous?

Sorry, I missunderstood. I thought the PS3 was NOT able to output Component and HDMI simultaneously.
