hey guys,i have the sub hooked up to the sub pre out on my yamaha rx v2500.my problem is that i cannot get any real power out of my sub without turning the volume up on my amp.my thinking is that with it being a powered sub that i should be able to have my amp on a lower volume setting and still be able to use the volume control on the sub and get way to much bass if i choose.but this is not the case,i can have the volume on the sub turned up all the way,and the sub only increases in volume as i turn up my amp.almost as if the volume on the sub is acting more like a gain control taking power from the amp.not sure what im doing wrong but this does not seem to be the way it should work.any help would be great.thanks.

jonnyk,

The volume control on the sub controls the amount of applification done by the sub on the input signal. The level of that input signal is controlled by your Yamaha. So, yes, the volume of the sub will be affected by how you adjust the volume on your receiver...as it should be. It's possible that the level of that sub signal is set very low on the Yamaha: could be that your sub level is set low (somewhere in the negative dB range), or it could be that you have your speakers set up so that little or no bass is actually being sent to your sub. Check your speaker settings. I'd be interested in knowing if you've solved your problem.

Have you run through the receiver setup procedures? You'll want to go through the setup menu's so your receiver recognizes the sub. Go through the GUI menu's to ensure the sub-out is activated, and you can also set your speakers to big/small, etc, etc, and all that stuff.

Before you connect the MIC & run the test tones, be sure to turn the subwoofer gain down to around 25-35% gain to avoid a possible subwoofer meltdown.

Yep, sounds like a set up issue. Check the sub level in the AVR, set speakers to small and turn that crossover all the way up on the sub and at 80 on the AVR.

One night after 8 martinis I decided I would tune my set up; I did the auto set-up and then put a CD in and thought my sub was broken. The drinks clouded the known fact that with my AVR and the auto set-up; it sets the speakers to large and the crossover to 200hz. That equaled very little bass.
