Am I being too PICKY ? (Aperion 633-T's & SUB)

Ok, I just got a pair of Aperion Audio 633-T's delivered yesterday... When I went home to open them up, I thought the packaging was decent, I thought the outside finish was decent, the woofer's & tweeter looked good but just like with the Aperion S-12 sub I purchased & sent back. The bass tube looked like someone used it for a DIP CUP. (I know, because I used to dip when I was a young fool). AND not only that I can see dust and inside the bass tube I can see the cheap foam filler broad as daylight which to me looks CHEESY.

I'm about to send the whole lot back and buy POLK AUDIO.

Do you think I'm being too picky ?

I kind of like the Aperion Center that I have, and I already installed the in-wall Aperion Speakers for surround so I'm stuck with those, but they look nice.

I hooked up everything last night, but couldn't get my Marantz SR8001 to work... got no sound, though I only played with it for a short while, it was late.

Even if the Aperion 633-T's sound good, I feel embarrassed taking off the covers to show friends and what not.

Do all speakers look like this ? (I haven't purchased a good set of speakers in about 8 years so I don't know... But I remember a set of JBL's back then that looked 'new'.)...

Please give me your input, any input. I'm about to send them back.

You want advice? OK, first, lighten up about the forum; not everybody has an opinion on your situation even if they're read your post. Second, no, I don't think you're being too picky-you're spending your hard-earned money and you know what you want and expect for that money. Now, whether or not you'll find what you're looking for at your pricepoint could be another matter entirely, so you may want to decide if it's worth it to you to clean out the dust yourself and trim back any offending foam...have you looked at the Polk speakers you like, to see if they're similarly afflicted?

It's not just dust in the sub port holes... It's like this crusty stuff that's on top of the finish... The Sub was the same way... so I went with a JLAudio.

I do need to lighten up... Just having a bad day.

First off, I just want to apologize to the Audioholics forum and it's members. This isn't a bad board, I've just been too busy lately and stretching myself too thin. In any case...

The speakers are pretty incredible.

There is that discoloration, crud on the insides of the bass tube which I still need to get pics of.

I threw everything the Marantz SR8001 had at it... Everything and they didn't distort or anything. I'm thinking about getting an AMP just for the 633-T's.

Anyone got any suggestions on an amp just for the 633-T's... ?? I believe they'll handle 300watts. The JLAudio Fathom F112 is definitely more than enough power so I want these 633-T's to keep up... and I know there's more in 'em.

I'll get those pics too.

P.S. ---> Then again, I haven't calibrated the receiver to the room with the Audyssey mic, nor have I calibrated the speakers with the Aperion tool...

Sound like you are happy with the sound of the new speakers. That is what is important, right? People with be impressed with the real wood veneer and the sound of your system and will not be stairing at the port from 6" away.

Here is my advice for your HT enjoyment:
1. Run audyssey auto setup on your new speakers and sub.
2. Check the speaker size and crossover settings and adjusts if necessary.
3. Calibrate video with DVE or Avia.
4. Enjoy.

The speakers are an easy load for your mid-fi receiver. Like you stated, you can drive them to loud levels without distortion. There is no need for the receiver or amp to corrolate to the Max power spec of the speakers.

While the way things sound is important i think looks & build quality are equally important,if you have to settle for speakers with imperfections in the build,finish or any other area you might just as well bought them used & saved a bunch of cash,not being able to see the flawa unless looking for them does not mean the flaws are not there.

My advice is that if there is ANYTHING you dont like about them send them back ASAP & let the manufacturer or sales rep know that you will settle for nothing less than perfection,also let them know that if they need to have the replacement speakers shipped to them(for inspection) instead of drop shipped from the manufacturing facility then thats what you expect.

We pay way too much money on this stuff to accept anything less than perfect examples.

My screen-name is one of my vehicles, actually my favorite one. Some people think it's for 'nasty' but it's not. NASD90, not nasd. no biggie, I've just got an email or 2 about it.

In any caseI totally agree with your 4 points but my question to you is... I agree with you that the receiver or amp doesn't need to be equal what the speakers will handle but, won't they sound better with say a 250W amp than the 125 the marantz is pumping out ??

If you can afford an extra amp by all means slap it on there and see if it sounds better, louder or whatever you are missing.

I would second the vote on sending the speakers back, You paid for them and they sould look good and sound good. I wouldnt keep speakers that I was ashamed to take the grills off and you dont have to settle for that.

It's not really that the front loudspeakers are missing anything it's that I know they have more and that freakin' sub is way ahead of the pack. I gotta say, the guy who sold it to me said "...this is one of the few things in your home theater/stereo system that you're ever going to need to upgrade...", and he was right. So, I'm thinking of pumping some extra wattage to the front's.

I did some reading on this forum and heard that the Rotel's were a decent catch. I like them a lot. I'm looking for about a 250W 2 Channel. Just started looking so no rush... Any recommendations would be great. When I send those pics to Aperion, I'm going to ask what their recommendation is for those particular speakers. The must have a favorite.

When you do start amp hunting take a look at some PERREAUX amps,they are in the same price range as adcom & rotel but perform like a Krell.

Lotsa bang for the buck.

So that would be a North American Standard Defender 90? I used to have an old '89 Ranige that I rebuilt and use to pound around with. There are no greater vehicles off-road IMHO. Off topic I know, but I still drool over D90s and 110s though I can't convince myself to drop 35k on a truck with 100k miles on it. I'm foolish and will wait until they decide to re-release the Defenders on this side of the pond.

Audio related: I got a chance to listen to the 533Ts at the HES2007 here in Manhattan last weekend and was very impressed by their sound. Seems like you made a good choice with those though I agree with HiFi Honey that if the finish is crap call Aperion Back. The guys I met at show last week were really great people and seemed to stand behind their product 100%. Call them up and tell them to dropship you another set, shipping is free both ways so at least it's no skin off your back. My 2 cents.

THESE WHARFEDALE OPUS 2's and the TRI-CENTER ARE THE BOMB...

LEAGUES ABOVE THE APERIONS... Even WITHOUT THE AMP (Hasn't come in yet)

EVEN MY WIFE WAS IMPRESSED WITH THE MIDRANGE SOUND, ESPECIALLY WHEN SHE'S WATCHING HER AppleTV.

What a great choice.

I love these speakers.

P.S. No, I wasn't being too picky... These speakers are so much better in sound & finish it's amazing. I would never buy those other one's again, and I didn't pay too much more for these. Go to ayselectronics.com... Terry is the guy's name and he is honest and upfront and he delivered these to me new in box, not opened.
