the pic on the left is a 10"er
the one on the right is a 12"er

look at the proportion of the surround material and the cone :)

I like the donut look of the one on the left BUT of course, a 12 is better at everything

Is that a Velodyne Sub Contractor or a JL audio Fathom?

Why are you buying more subs?

Left looks better IMO.

The one on the right is slightly bigger and that's about the only thing you can determine from the pictures.

They look identical exept the right one is larger. I like the right. Subwoofers are like things in Texas, Bigger is always better.

in terms of proportion, the width of the cone surround on the 10"er "looks" wider than the width of the surround of the 12"er.

does that mean a smaller driver from the same series will have more stroke? (because a bigger driver [with more area] doesn't need that much of a stroke)

I can't wait for the SVS sealed boxes ... cheap thrill (actually it's expensive), I need a fix.

exactly what I think, but I can't get over the fact that the 12 is significantly better. (though this is only for a music setup, no HT)

the 8"er look much closer to the 10"er than the 10"er is to the 12"er

I asked Curt of Velodyne and he said the 10's and 12's had the same surrounds.

I guess the pics were not to scale WITH each other.

but anyway, which would you guys pic, dual 10's or single 12? (theoretical question, I'm not necessarily buying that)

That's a tough one, I'd have to hear them to be sure, but I'm leaning slightly toward the dual 10's, assuming equal power. I'm really not sure which type of setup between those two would sound better overall.

For a dedicated 2 channel set up i'd say dual subs all the way, people can say that bass is omni directional all day long but in true stereo mode different bass signals are sent to the left & right.

That pic reminds me of the old D series from Bob C. I like the look of the D8, but know from simple physics the D12 is the way to go. Larger area means more air movement, drivers being similar in design. Plus, with a larger box, it should be more efficient, deeper, and offer more spl.

as you can see I have nothing to do ...
note this chart only applies to drivers with the same stroke.

That settles it. You need dual 12's. :D

You really need to build your own sub. You are so into subs, I'm surprised you don't hand out at AVS in the subwoofer and DIY forums.

Have you checked out "realmofexcursion" website? The JL Audio subs are amazing.

I heard a setup yesterday in a guys Suburban. He had 4 Audiopipe subs (I think that's what they are - I'm not familiar with the name, but I have a new found respect for them) with a ton of power, and this had to be the loudest bass I have ever heard in my life. It hurt, and I was 50' away.

I use the username ribbit over at AVS (all variations of mike c was taken).

I tried getting a TC Sounds LMS 5400 18" driver but never got a reply from anyone at TC sounds on when it would become available. Maybe one day when they're available, I'll consider them for my first DIY - I'm not settling on anything less of a driver. If ever, I'll start with a sealed enclosure, I hate computing for port size and length.

regarding JL audio, I'd just buy the fathom if it were available here (or in canada with 230v) than build a DIY with a JL audio driver.

dual 12's ... hmmm ... :)

'what if' scenarios galore ...

which would be better, dual SC12's or a single DD12?
