New To Home Theater Audio

Hi All,

I'm new here. I'm interested in getting some advice in setting up Home Audio Speakers on a PC. I've heard of it being done, but I'm not too sure of how it's done. I'm not happy with my PC speakers, as they seem to lack definition when listening to music. My thought was to use SVSounds 5.1 Surround Sound Speakers with PB12-NSD - Black System, with a Auzen X Meridian Sound card & a Pioneer VSK-817-K Reciever. Can this be done? Will this configuration give me good sound?

All help provided is greatly appreciated. I thank all who reply for their time & patience with me.

Sure it can be done but will you really need so much power when you will be sitting very close to 5.1 speakers? Only you can decide. :)

- If the sound card only has analog line-level outputs you will need a cable with a 1/8" stereo mini plug on one end and 2 RCA connectors on the other end. If the sound card happens to have RCA jacks (sometimes labeled 'cinch' connectors) then you'd just need a normal stereo audio cable with RCA connectors on each end.

- If the sound card has optical digital out, you'd need an optical cable. Check if the sound card uses the mini-toslink connector and if so you'd need a cable with a mini-toslink on one end and the full size toslink on the other end.

- If the sound card has a coax digital out, you'd just need a cable with single RCA connectors on each end.

The 817 isn't what I would consider to be a powerful receiver. I am using a Pioneer SX253R with some BIC towers for my PC, it works great and I don't ever have to worry about clipping or speaker damage.:D

Hi All,

Thanks for the replies. If the pioneer isn't powerful enough, what about the Yamaha HTR-5890?

Again, my Thanks to all who reply.

If you sit three feet away from the speakers, 15 watts per channel is powerful enough. It was a joke. I don't think most people need to achieve reference level from their computer speakers when they sit so close to them.

Sorry for the confusion, my responce was to MDS. The Pioneer VSX-817 is plenty powerful enough for your application, the Yamaha would be ridiculously overkill for just a PC sound system.

And one last note, if you want to get the VSX-817 I would advise you to get last years model the 816 because it has more features and is cheaper now. The 817 took some important things away such as preouts for all channels, which is lame.

I understand, but given the features to price ratio (excluding power) of the 816 to cheaper and higher priced receivers I don't think there is a better deal.;)

Hi All,

Thanks again for the information. I'll go with the 816.
