First DIY car enclosure

My old 12" box wouldn't fit flush with the rear seats and was taking up too much room so here is my solution. I used two 3/4" boards of MDF to flush mount the sub to and built the floor with 2" risers to clear the magnet in the spare tire well. The amp is bolted to the car underneath the enclosure.

I'm going to be doing this with my car as well. Did you have to use 2-3/4 inch pieces (very heavy)? And did you build an enclosure behind the driver? I'm thinking of grabbing a shallow mount car driver (Pioneer, etc) and making the most of my cars small tire well.

If you want to really seal it up you can do as a co-worker did when I installed stereos. He fibreglassed the entire spare tire well and screwed his MDF plate to that.

He did it in a way that was removable as well. Pretty slick and a great tight seal.

Another cheaper/quicker/uglier way would be to use great stuff.

I built an enclosure for 2 pioneer 10" in a buddy's RX-7 using the spare junk space behind the drivers seats. We never could get a good enough seal though and he ended up going with a box in the hatch.

That always seems to be the best option for someone what wants bass, but doesn't want to sacrifice trunk space to do it. I just can't bring myself to get rid of my spare tire.

It's lighter than the the box it replaced, I know that. I only double up the MDF around the sub itself(18"x18" board) then used a router to flush mount the sub.

There is no enclosure, the only way I could do that was to fiberglass one in. That may be a future project.

I saw a step by step tutorial online of this being done in a integra.

Yep. It was on my Integra Forum. I'm not sure if it is still up or not, but I'll check. Our Tegs have an additional open area where the tire is, so you don't actually have to lose the spare to do this :) Another friend of mine did some fiberglass work on his Vette and he said it wasn't too difficult. From the instructions the Teg guy had up, it looked pretty straight forward.

post is a little old, but i did the same thing with 3 xtant 10's in my spare tire well. somrwhere i have build pics too. basically what i did, was make a fiberglass mold of my tire well, and bond a wooden frame in. then i built a shallow box/riser over it to level out my trunk.

Are those xtant amps as well? How does the whole thing perform?

sorry bout the delayed post...
the 2 things on the bottom are a 2 channel amp for the fronts and a 6band paramectric eq. the white is because its polished and i havn't take it off yet. one of these days i'm going to polish the amp and pull off the cover so they match. mounted upside down on the black box hainging under the rear deck is the sub amp. its rated(very conservatively) at over 1000 watts.
all in all it sounds really good. the gain is turned al of the way down and the sub level on the deck is down most of te time too. it blends really well with the fronts and isn't overpowering. but when i want to crank it up it gets really loud and hits REALLY hard.
