Worth buying 4 year coverage on SONY LCD?

I might be buying a 40 inch Sony Bravia (LCD) TV from Best Buy, and was wondering if it is worth purchasing the service pack. It's covered for one year but after that for 2 years it costs 260, or for 4 years it costs 360. I know if something happenes to these tv's they are really expensive to fix but is it really worth spending extra hundreds of dollars to have it covered for 4 years. whats the likelyhood something will go wrong before 4 years?

An extended warranty is an insurance policy and just like every other kind of insurance, the odds are in favor of the insurer - not you.

When electronics fail, they usually do so very early and that phenomenon is affectionately known as 'infant mortality'. If you pay for an extended warranty and never have any problems, which is the normal case, you have wasted your money. If you do have a small issue and the cost of the repair is smaller than the warranty cost, you have again wasted your money. Remember that the odds are in favor of never having a problem, otherwise the insurance company would not offer the insurance.

In general, extended warranties should be avoided. Some people think they are worthwhile for 'peace of mind' but financially it is a poor bet.

Hello Akoutis.

Always buy the warranty! I'm an inhome TV Technician, Most Tv Failures are after the first year, And customers always have warrantee buyers
remorse. Nothing is cheap to repair and Parts availability is always an issue.
Most manufactures are not interested in supporting the service industry. They would love if you would buy a new tv when the old one breaks down.

Ok, so how many of the millions of TVs sold each year break after the first year or after the manufacturer warranty expires? The answer is simple: a VERY small percentage; otherwise the 'insurance' company wouldn't offer warranties.

Look at it this way: Do you think Best Buy sells extended warranty's at a loss? There's a reason that every sales person is forced to offer them.
