The new album was released today. I picked it up at lunch and have really only had one pass through, but so far I really like it. It has a good mix of hard and soft as always. It is a bit of a new sound for them at certain points, though it seems a bit softer than what I remember hearing at the show last year. Though there are only 6 tracks, one track is nearly 18 minutes long!! Overall, I give it a thumbs up. Can't wait for the DVD-A version....

Any idea when the DVD-A will be released?
According to random Googling, in September or so. While I haven't received my copy yet (it arrives in the mail tomorrow), I bought the limited edition which comes with a DVD-Video with DTS 5.1 which should hold me over until the DVD-Audio shows up.

It has arrived. The "limited edition" came with the CD, a DVD, as well as a book inside of a sleeve. While I'm waiting for the DVD to finish ripping to my computer for a listen I'm killing time here...

Any connection between this ablum and the Public Enemy album of the same name?

PE was ....black planet, not blank planet. You are old enough to remember when rap, although I don't care for it, was real?

Steve mentioned the fact that the album titles were similar and that he liked PE too; but no there is no connection. LOL, if you look at my previous thread when the album was announced, I also thought it was black planet, not blank.

Second disc is DVD-V, the DVD-A won't be released until sometime around Sept.

How weird. It's funny how sometimes you see what isn't there. I totally read it as "Black Planet". Indeed, I remember REAL rap. I actually saw Public Enemy at college in the 90's. Rage Against the Machine opened up for them. That was a great show. Up until the day of the concert, I couldn't believe that PE was coming to my little podunk college.

Probably the most recent rapper that I really liked was DMX. But yeah, most of the recent stuff is pretty lame. Some of it is fun to dance to, but that's about it.

Thanks. Must be part of their masterplan to make me buy it twice. :(
That is why I only bought the CD, since the DVD-A was already announced for later this year. I can still use the CD elsewhere like in the car.

True, and I'll probably end up doing the same. Hate to nitpick but I just wish they were released together, much like Morph the Cat was.

I got mine from amazon yesterday along with the Stupid Dream cd/dvd-a. I've only been able to listen to them in my car, a couple of times each.
FoaBP has some really good pieces, I think I'm going to keep discovering nuances with every listen. Gavin Harrison's performance on the title track is amazing. Of all the bands I like, he's my favorite drummer. Lifeson and Fripp are guests and both performances are stellar. This might be the album of the year. Time will tell.
Stupid Dream has a couple of star tracks, especially Even Less. I'm looking forward to listen to the 5.1 mix, but for the moment I only own stereo systems.

Hi all,
I have to say thanks for starting this thread, as it was my introduction to Porcupine Tree. As I am typing I am listening to the new album. So far I have listened to Blank Planet, In Absentia, and Coming Somewhere DVD. All of them have been great. After reading a few threads about PT I asked some of my students that happen to be "into" music and not only had some of them heard of them, but they are going to see them when they come to Detroit. Anyways thanks again for getting the word out about this band, I have been enjoying them quite a bit.:D

While the music is compelling and the CD pretty much matches their live performance, it can't touch their past DVD As for clarity or separation. This one is going to the car when the hi-rez disk comes out. I've also read that the 5.1 DTS mix is not as aggressive as DW, IA or SD and will be the same mix for the DVD A...but I'm sure I won't be disappointed :) .
