Well its time to upgrade

Im looking at getting the Yamaha RX-V661 to support 7.1 Axiom Audio Epic Grand and the HD-A2 which seems an appropriate choice. (might get the HD-XA2 if I can afford it)

Now it wouldnt be right to get a HD-DVD player without a HDTV. However, my wallet is a practicaly empty from the reciever, audio, and dvd player . I would appreciate any sugestions on a HDTV that hopefully the price wont make my head spin while still giving me the most from the audio/reciever/HD-dvd player.

Any suggestions and remarks are appreciated.

If you can find the Hitachi F59 model in 51, 57, 65 inch screens, you will be amazed at the price. (and picture)
Don't let anyone tell you that it is old technology and therefore inferior. It is old technology and is superior.

P.S. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT, judge the tv by the picture in the showroom. Search for online discussion for owner's opinions of this tv and the pq.

I would be remiss if I didn't remind you that you can pick up a HD front projector for about $1,000 and get phenomenal quality that is only enhanced by HD that much more at 100"...

I would personally recommend against investing to much in HD disc technologies right in the midst of a format war as HD DVD is solid, yet was seriously outpaced in sales by Blu-ray in the first part of the year. If you've done your homework on this and are prepared for a loss by buying into either format then be ready for that risk. Either format could be the next Betamax, and nobody who owns either format should deny that it COULD happen to their format and be prepared to repurchase an HD player in the competing format. Lots of Beta users out there who had to rebuy into VHS.

Really, since you haven't given any sort of HD budget, size you want, viewing distance, or much else - it really is very difficult to make a display recommendation for you.

What size is the room? What is your budget? How far away will you be sitting? Do you plan to play video games as well? If you answer these you'll probably get a better response from everyone here.

The room size is 15ft by 12ft, budget of $1000. Ill be sitting roughly 6ft away, its a little small for a projector. I do plan to play video games, but not that much. Because its a small space that Im working with I am interested in a flat screen.

I know that blu-ray and HD are going head to head right now, I only picked HD because that is what I am familiar with. Just like anyone else out there I dont want to invest in one just to have it become the next betamax.

With that being said, thanks for the replies.

6 ft. viewing distance is probably too close for a front projector. For $1000, i don't think you can do any better than the Panasonic 42" Plasma right now. Many places have it on sale for your budget price.

Look around however, Sharp has a very good PQ if you would rather go with an LCD. Bottom line is you want to go somewhere that you can actually view TV's you are interested in (preferably in an A-B comparison, and where you can play different kinds of source material).

For your DVD needs, It seems that Blu-ray has taken an early lead based on sales, movie studio deals, etc. However, that is no guarantee that it'll win the format war. It looks like there are some dual format (HD and Blu-ray) players on the horizon if you want to wait for that. Or if you want to stay out of the format war for now, you could always get an upscaling dvd player like the Oppo DV-981HD ($230 or so). There are many other as well, however, owning the Oppo, I can vouch for it's quality build and good PQ.

Good luck with whatever you decide to do.
