Hey everyone,

I have a bit of a problem here. I just blew the tweeter on my left front speaker (JBL E-30) i bought it sometime last year and i think jbl products come with a 5 year warranty. I am not sure what to do because the JBL website is down and customer support line is closed.

I need some info quickly or I am seriously gunna cry.

Wait until Monday when JBL is open for business. Most companies are not open on weekends. Even though you have a 5 year warranty they may charge you for the driver if they detemine that abuse is what caused the failure. Sounds like you might have been sending a clipped signal to your speakers. The E-30's are not expensive speakers so a new tweeter should not be that expensive even if you have to pay.

Yeah, shouldnt be that expensive i guess. One question though, will i have to send in the speakers or will they send me the part???

They're real good about it. Tell 'em what happened and they'll just send you a new part.

What did you do to blow it?

I turned the reciever on and it was on the PC input with no sound coming through it. Everything sounds good up to there but apparently, the reciever was turned up to max and when i hit the play button on my computer, the spike from the treble must have blown out the tweeter. it really sucks. i gotta get the problem fixed before my dad finds out. haha. its my system but he paid for most of it.

Have a receipt handy. Some companies require proof of purchase, which is not the same as simple possession of a product.

You may have a problem, I just checked their parts store and they don't sell the tweeter for that series anymore. They have other parts for the speaker, but not the tweeters. This could mean they ran out of NOS, which could also mean the tweeter is prone to failure. If you can contact them and they tell you that they will not replace the tweeter for free I would mention that it does not appear in their parts store and make the point that this tweeter may be prone to failure. From what I have heard, Harman Industries has decent customer service so you should be fine.:)

Well in that case... whats gunna happen. If they cant fix it what do i do?? I cant afford to buy anything right now and as soon as my short-tempered father finds out, i will pretty much be screwed. Do you think its possible that they will just upgrade me to another model and ask me to pay the difference because i could probably do that. Anything as long as my money for these speakers dont go to waste....

You're a wise man for keeping that receipt.

That means they're gonna HAVE to make good on their warranty. How? I dunno. But, I do know thay have to.

Since they seem to have had many failures, maybe you didn't do anything wrong after all.

Most likely theyll send ya an equivalent unit, or at least what they consider an equivalent. I'm sure it'll be an acoustic match to the original, but a bit more sturdy.

Ok, so i still havent been able to get a hold of someone to talk to because no one at the stupid canadian number answers. I did find out one thing tho. I CAN order the tweeter through jbl. I am allowed to order 2 parts, free of charge but only 2 parts per product. I will order the tweeter but i am hesitating because what if its the crossover, or the wires, or some sort of a fuse. how am i supposed to know what part to get?? should i go ahead and order it or wait till i can get a hold of someone from canada,,

Hey. Firstly, calm down. Best thing you can do in a crisis is keep a level head.
You haven't described what the tweeter is doing. Is it buzzing, humming, or just not working at all.
If you are sure the tweeter is blown, I would order the new one and see how it goes.
I was a sneaky kid, so I should probably counsel you to be honest with your dad, but I don't know your sitch. Will he know the tweeter is blown? If so can you disconnect it till the new one comes so it isn't making an offensive buzzz............?

Seriously, I have no life.
Clipped the tweeter , i think .
That is the same thing. When you clip, the RMS power just zooms. The more you clip the closer you get to 2X amp RMS power. Tweets are, mostly, very low power capable.

Ok, first of all, the tweeter doesnt work period.. it just stopped after i accidently played some really loud crappy quality song with distorted treble.

My dad wont notice because he doesnt come into my room much and he never touches my stuff. the only way he would notice is if he heard it and i dont even think he can properly work my reciever so i dont see him turning it on and sitting in my room to watch tv..

Now for the second problem. If the tweeter just stopped working, can i be certain its the tweeter and possibly not the crossover network or somthing. remember, i only have one chance to order parts for free, i dont want to make the wrong move.

While there are very few 100% certainties in this life

The odds of it being the crossover are very, very slim indeed.

Alright well i am going to try calling again earlier tomorrow to see if anyone answers and unless someone says somthing else, i guess i will just order the tweeter and replace it myself.

Buy a cheap multimeter and test the tweeter for continuity.

But as everyone has stated. The chance that it's the crossover is slim to none.
