Cylinder VS. Box Sub?

I was looking at the SVSound wed and noticed the cylinder subs. I have been waiting for the SVS 13 inch subs to come out or the AV123 BMF1. How do the cylindr subs compare to the box subs? In my room I could probably use two cylinder subs instead of one box. Will that help? Would like to spend $2000 , but can go higher.

The SVS site has an extensive discussion of box vs cylinder in the FAQ section. The short answer is that they are equal in performance but the cylinders are lighter and cheaper to ship with the disadvantage being their large height.

It's personal preference.....

Providing you are comparing between subs in the same class, both are capable of excellent performance. It's more about which physical design you prefer........... The decision between the two is mostly cosmetic.

As everyone has said, performance-wise, they're pretty much equal. Which you go with depends a lot on personal taste. If desired, a box sub can be blended into the room as stand or end table, making it not as noticable. Translation= the wife is generally more tolerant of it. There is NO blending a cylinder sub! Translation= You're probably single or the wife is blind. It's definately a conversation piece for the uninitiated! I love mine!

After reading the FAQ at SVS I now have another question. It sounds as if the three different size subs have strenghs and weakness. If I use two subs would I be better off mixing the subs or use two of the same sub? the more I read, the more I need!! to read.

Call or email SVS with your room specs. They're a pretty small company and are known for being very helpful as far as which model or how many will suit your needs and wants.
