Subwoofer Issue - PLEASE HELP

Hi All,

I recently setup my Denon reciver and Velodyne DLS 3750R sub and am having a bit of an issue. For starters I performed that auto speaker setup thru the Denon which stated to turn the Crossover on the sub to "direct" and the volume to the middle (so 50 out of 100). Anyway, auto setup put the chaennl level for the sub at -9db, and the sub would boom when I turned the reciver on and boom louder when I turned it off. So, I lowered the volume on the sub to 35 or of 100 and auto setup put the channel level at -3 db. The boom is lower but still present. I guess I can continue to lower the sub volume until the auto setup reads 0 db for a cahnnel level but my concern is am I going to just be producing less bass the more I lower it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

LMC

I soft "boom" is normal when your sub detects the signal. If it bothers you then turn the AVR on first and the sub second. You should turn the crosover on the sub all the way up or deactivate it if possible and use the crossover in the AVR.(set it on 80hz for now; you can read more on crossovers on this site and decide if you need to make changes later) Usually you can just set the volume on the sub around the 1/3-1/2 way mark.

All this being said; My auto set-up is always way off with my sub so I use a SPL meter and a test disc or the teat tone from the AVR and make certain all DBs are the same(speakers and sub)

Does it have an auto vs on setting? How do you have it set?

Ok, maybe the noise is normal and I'm just not used to it. Then again maybe an SPL meter is the best way to go.

Also, the sub does have an auto on feature and that's how I have it set. So basically it sleeps until it receives a signal.

Thanks,

Leif

I use the auto-on and it does have a little "boom" but it is pretty quite. A subs "job" is to produce a low fx sound from the signal it recieves so when it recieves the on signal it needs to "woof"

Hi Greg,

Thanks for getting back to me. Any idea what volume you have your sub set to and what cahnnel level the receiver is set to?

Thanks

...I am not sure that my settings will help you but here you go.

My settings are really dependant on where the wife has moved the furniture that week as she is always moving things and I am always having to re-cal. As of last night... My sub volume is a little below the halfway mark, crossover is as high as it will go on the sub and at 80hz on the AVR, channel level is at +1 with all speakers leveled at 75db via SPL when my master volume is set to zero.

Hi Greg,

Thanks for getting back to me. Any idea what volume you have your sub set to and what cahnnel level the receiver is set to?

Thanks

Yeah, it definitely sounds like you're just hearing the normal turn-on and off "thump" that a powered sub makes. My Boston sub is pretty much inaudible, but my Earthquake makes a little "pop" when it first turns on. Especially if it is just kicking in during a loud part of a movie soundtrack.

I would also highly recommend you get an SPL meter and use your receiver's test tones to set all of the speakers to the same db. Then you can tweak the sub up or down if you want more or less output.

N0 problem.

Get a SPL when you can; I never got my system blended in correctly until I used the Avia disc and a SPL. It is awesome now; a perfect extension of my music. I turn the level up by 2db via the AVR for movies for some extra punch. I can make myself feel physically nauseated with the DVD U-571 at reference levels because of the bass.....yeeehaaawww....

Just wanted to get an idea.

Thanks
