Hi i'm new here and i'm lookng to buy a reciever and 2 floorstanding loud speakers. for now but i think eventually i will get a surround setup. Anyways my brother works at best buy and gets cost on all their products so my choice is limited to Bestbuy and FutureShop.

So for my reciever i thinki've decided on the Pioneer VSX-917 which i can get for $365can instead of $500. But i'm up for anyother sugestions.

As for the speakers, my brother seams to like the JBL Balboa 30 's because he can get them for $150 (jbl seam to hav a rediculous mark up) but i can't find anything about them on the net so I don't really know what to get, infinity, klipsch, polk, jbl (venue, balboa)....

Here are the links to what Best buy and futureshop offer so take a look and let me know thanks

Price for the speakers is around 500-1000 and 500 for the amp (not cost)

Recievers: Bestbuy FutureShop

Speakers: Bestbuy Futureshop

BTW: I already have an LG 37LC2D (got it for $999can :) )
and a panasonic dvd-s52 dvd player (using and HDMI cable)

Thanks alot.

The JBL Balboa must be a new line. I think they look nice and the specs are typical of JBL speakers (wide frequency response, high sensitivity). I have JBL J900MV speakers that were purchased 10 years ago and they are still in pristine condition. Of your choices I think the JBL would do just fine.

It's too bad they still only offer black and haven't gotten around to making di/bipole speakers for the surrounds. If they did I'd consider the balboas myself.

Thanks the surrounds aren't a priority right now seeing as i don't have the cash so i can alsways buy different brand surrounds but as for the receiver is this a good choice? it seems good .
i guess another question is would the the lower end Harmon kardons be able to power the balboas?

Athena LS

Check out the new Athena LS series speakers. They use the higher end drivers from Energy speakers.

I'd look into the Yamaha receiver line.
Speakers, you really need to decide for your self by listening. I Know that's a little rough at B.B., but as long as you can return them, I'd just go with what sounds best to you at the store.

There so many speaker choices in your price range that it is mind boggling. I know, I was in that position a few months ago when looking for a pair of speakers to use in a modest 2.1 system. I ended up keeping my Paradigm Mini Monitors. My suggestion is to take your time and audition everything you can. The B&W 600 series where the ones I liked the best Also I continue to have a love affair with my Paradigm Studio 20's even after six years.

Pioneer receiver

FYI,
The pioneer 917 sells hear for $300 US and 1016 for $400. The $365 CAN price seams closer to retail than an employee discount price. Maybe you can get a better discount on a Yamaha or Denon receiver.

yeah but you have to understand that even cost is higher here. it quite annoying but anyways i ended up getting the pioneer 816. i didn't need the HDMI switching and i've heard last years models are much better then this years. all in all i'm quite happy with the purchase. as for spakers i have the Balboa 30s set up right now but i might swap them for the infinity 360s

Thank God, I was worried you would get the 917, I am glad you researched this because the 917 (in my book) is a complete backwards move from the previous models. LAME!

The 816 still presents an excellent value to those who may possibly upgrade in the future, because it has preouts for all channels. You made a wise choice, very wise choice.:D

You should try out Klipsch synergy speakers. Nice sound and don't need alot of juice to power them.

Low impedance dips make the Klipsch sound rather poor with weak amplification in most cases. A better rounded speaker such as Athena would be more practical. In the end the user must decide what they like in terms of sound with their components.
