So I have most of my system put together. Now I need a surge protector, but I don't even know where to begin!!! What factors come into play when picking a surge protector? I guess I don't really have a budget on this so what ever I need I will get, but I only want what I need.

I was looking at the Monster Power HTS 1600, which I found on ebay for $100, is this too much for my theater system?

What I have so far

I really don't think there is such a thing as "too much" surge protection, too expensive, yes. but not too much. :)

But as holedem pointed out, there can be better choices.

I didn't think that anyone was going to respond to my posting.. thanks.. I will look into panamax. So for $100 you think I could get something better from panamax then Monster Power HTS 1600?

I have panamax, and a few other brands of surge supressors
form working at Unisys.
Buy one from this company. http://www.elect-spec.com/acprot2.htm#Laboratory
They are nothing fancy to look at. So what. They usually sit on the floor
behind everything anyway.
It's the performance that counts.
I had noise from switching lights, vacuums, etc and theirs stopped the noise.

Monster cable inc. and similar companies take this to the bank IMO. I find the snake oil speaker cables and $70 simple power strips... offensive.

I have a $40 Panamax 8 outlet strip and get zero noise from fluorescent lights, monitors, vacuuming, an oil burner in the next room, guitar amps, and a treadmill that completely blots out all AM radio in and around the house. I've even been trying to make it fail but no dice. :D

I was in Staples the other day and one of the major brands (can't remember at the moment) of surge protectors had power conditioning and it was a $40 or so. I suspect every surge protector will soon have "noise filtering". It probably costs next to nothing to include on the product and the major manufactures have figured out that there is a huge markert for surge protectors with "noise filtering".

heres the 2500 and its still 99 bucks, and if im not mistaken i think audioholics reviewed this unit, and it has a msrp of $300
Not a bad price for anything monster, however that unit has a surge energy rating of less than 2000 joules. Take a look on the amazon marketplace. I just saw two retailers with the APC H10 listing for under $200 new. That's a serious steal. The H10 will suck up almost 5000 joules before needing replacement and the APC name is highly respected in the IT world. In fact....look down a thread or two and read up! ;)

I recently purchased a 10 outlet APC surge protector from Circuit City for about $30. It has a decent supression/joule rating (around 1800 I believe) as well as EMI/RFI filtering and spots for coax cable & phone line. It was designed for use with a computer system, but it works just fine for me.

The true test for these sort of things, IMO, is when you actually have a surge or strike and whether the unit protects your equipment.

What blows my mind with the snake oil power conditioning stuff is that a computer is SO much more sensitive to power stability issues than most consumer-grade electronics yet power conditioning/supply components (UPS, surge protectors, etc.) are SO much cheaper than the stuff they sell for HT applications. Look at the UPS/surge protector connected to your computer at work...it probably didn't cost more than $50 yet it is protecting a >$1000 piece of equipment (for me anyway) with many more thousands worth of data stored on it.

My thought is: good enough for a PC, good enough for AV.
