Speaker/Equipment question

Hello to all...I have a question that covers alot of ground re: my system & room...here's my equipment: Denon DVM-4800 5 disc changer,A brand new Emotiva DMC-1 processor..A Sherbourne 125 x7 amp,Axiom 80ti's in front & Paradigm CC w/mostly Blue Jeans cables....my question is that my system really has alot of bass & a good amount of boom even w/ turning the DMC-1 bass down..the sound (while it can play quite loud & w/ some decent accuracy) seems to overwelm the room...I (we) have a large rug just in front of the system & speakers...The room is 17ft long x 14 ft wide & due to a side access opening on the right side I can't move my Axiom 80's any further out into the room.....The WAF for room tuning stuff is ZERO...so my question is do I/should I get smaller speakers or a smaller amp ? (lower watt output)-I havn't owned bookshelf speakers in YEARS...would the Axiom M22's w/a small sub be a better matchup?
Thank You!

Do you have a sub now? I get the impression that you do not from your post, please forgive me if you do have a sub.

The amplifier and preamp shouldn't be affecting the bass, unless they are defective. I would assume they are not defective and I will move on to the next most logical step.:)

How close are the speakers to the walls? If they are very close to the walls that can create a prominence in the bass or boominess. Also make sure the speakers are not equidistant from each wall. Lastly, that isn't a very large room, so I would assume also that you are sitting up against the wall opposite to your entertainment center and main speakers. When your seating position is at the back wall you will more than likely notice a boominess problem.

I hope we nailed it, but I know things are never that lucky.;)

Yes Seth...you did nail it.....yes one speaker ...the right one...is only ~2 sq. ft from the rear & side wall (this is the one that can't be moved any farther towards the listening position without interrupting the foot traffic from the side opening that is our dining rm.)...the left speaker has more side room for placement but then getting the triangulation is messed up....this is why I was wondering about a bookshelf speaker or smaller floorstander w/ a small sub (which I do not yet have).
Thank You.

That is too bad you can't move the speaker. If you do end up getting bookshelfs and a sub know that if you put the sub on the front wall you will have similar results in the bass prominence.:)

You've got room acoustic issues, not equipment issues. You should address the room acoustics, because downgrading your speakers wont fix the problem.

For example, placing bass traps in the corners would be a good start to fixing your problems. You can buy traps that match the room color decor, and they'll melt away and blend in with the room sitting out of the way in the corners.

I repeat..... Buying new speakers will get you nowhere because what you need to do is fix your room. Downgrading your speakers & sub will solve nothing.

good luck

I have those very bass traps (Tri Traps from GIK) and they work wonders. It's had to imagine how much the sound quality of your system improves after installing room treatments without actually experiencing it yourself. It's in the night and day catagory.

Axiom speakers

Call Axiom for advice on placement of the M80s. The amp is definately not the problem, you can adjust the output power with the volume control on the pre-pro. Smaller floorstanders like the M60s might be more forgiving with placement. Also, if you crossed over the floorstanders with a sub at 60 or 80 Hz, it might help. The bass traps are a good idea regaurdless or which speakers you end up using.

Yes they are, and yes..... I agree with your assessment. The "room upgrade" is critical, and those who neglect the room itself are completely missing the boat. If more people were aware of the huge difference a "fixed room" can make, they'd quickly end days of living in ignorant 'bad sound' bliss and never look back:cool:

In my case, I lived in ignorant bliss for an entire decade before I finally understood and 'fixed' my HT room itself. Woah... what a difference a room can make!! Some of the responses in this thread are completely missing the boat, I think, because the responders themselves have yet to set sail.

The wakeup call has been delivered:)

As soon as I can figure out what my room needs and how to make it look good; I am in...

Also if you get bookshelfs and stands you still pretty much have the same issue.

I have to agree with the comments on room treatments. I've just been experimenting with acoustics and the movement of each panel to a different location has a noticable effect. I had some serious boomy bass issues around 40hz that I've managed to at least tame with simple home-made treatments. It's amazing the difference a few simple treatments can make.
