Hello,

Im looking for Instrumental music, heavy on the percussions! I do like all the strings and winds,Brass / full orchestra thing but looking for all that with a little up beat heavy on the percussion stuff (solo's even). If it exsists?
Im looking for a few artists/orchestra's I can checkout on Pandora's music site.
Thanx in advance!!!

Try these:

Tito Puente, any of his stuff, this is hot Afro/Cuban stuff.

Cal Tjader, especially his CD Soul Sauce and Black Orchid, anything by this guy is great.

Ronnie Cuber: CD "The Scene is Clean"

Gato Barbieri, CD "Tropico" also "Caliente" CD is not as percussive, but the string arrangements are first rate.

Check out the Latin Jazz section in Amazon.

You may...

...want to check out Mickey Hart's "Planet Drum"...

It's about 15 yrs. old but it does have percussion...

jimHJJ(...sorry, no strings or orchestration...)

I discovered a Persian percussion group called Zarbang who I really like. Their CD (mostly live) is currently my percussion "reference". If you are more rock oriented, Blue Man Group's stuff is also quite good (unique instruments that they make themselves.)

While Pandora is unlikely to have it, THIS ahs become my new favorite demo CD for all things percussion.

And no, I don't remember why I originally bought it 10+ years ago, but I do have the whole set.

If your interested in percussion that will test the limits of your system you might want to try the Sheffield Labs Drum and Track disc. You can get it at amazon.com or Elusivedisc or Acoustic sounds on CD. Also you might try any of the Blue Man Groups discs as they are very percussion heavy. The Sheffield Drum disc is the best sounding drum recording I have heard.

Two Words

Poncho Sanchez!! This is latin/Jazz which is highly percussion oriented after all, Poncho is a percussionist with lots of Congas, Bongos, Djembe' etc. Also tons of horns, piano and really fun afro/cuban grooves.
He has many, many albums as he has been recording since 1979 or 80.

As a huge bonus, he owns his own recording company and most of his stuff sounds amazing.

Enjoy!

Check out Evelyn Glennie on "UFO: The Music of Michael Daugherty." She's incredibly talented and I was lucky enough to see her perform this live. I'd describe it as modern classical.

I had forgotten about this CD (an analog transfer of the old Sheffield LP's), and didn't know it could still be purchased. Not only was the "Track Record" portion originally a direct-to-disc recording, but the "Drum Record" contains a solo from the great Jim Keltner (checkout Steely Dan's "Josie").
I'm a drummer, so anyone interested in percussion should checkout the Grammy award winning group Caribbean Jazz Project featuring vibraphonist Dave Samuels (most recent 4 CD's are the best).
