I wouldn't lose any sleep over this.

The only thing HDMI has over component is the ability to pass 1080p. And, the only source for that new-fangled 1080p format is the two new Hi-rez DVD formats. You ain't gonna get 1080p from no STB, or even OTA transmissions. They max out at 1080i, and many are only 720 anyway. and, standard def TV, which makes up the bulk of what you're getting, only clocks in at 480 anyway.

IOW, if you can run component from the STB to the TV, you'll be losing nothing. Now. just run some sort of digital audio from the STB to your receiver and you'll be all set.

Dvi To Hdmi

So you could just by any old HDMI TO DVI and use it , kinda of backwards right?

And mark, that is a fact that I ve kinda over looked, the 1080p is not coming through my STB. So component video can only handle upto 1080i?

Right and right.

Don't bother going to HDMI unless there's a good reason in terms of cabling or something. It *might* look better with your particular STB, so I certainly suggest trying it out at least.

HDMI is a necessity for most upconverting DVD players, though.

Yes, but I don't think you're gonna find the difference between 1080i and 1080p as great as you think it's gonna be.

But, like JT said, HDMI is a necessity for most upconverting DVD players and, IIRC, since the lack seems to be on the STB and not your monitor, you don't seem to have a problem.

Component CAN handle 1080P, it just depends if your tv accepts 1080p throught component inputs.

Or if the device you use will output 1080p. The brandwidth is available, but copyright folks don't want you to have good picture using older technoligy. You can get higher than 1080p over RGB type interfaces.
