Hi All!!

Some of you may have seen this post in someone else's thread - sorry about that, thought I had posted a new thread but ended up elsewhere. I guess that's why they call it "beginners."

I'm a new member who has sold most of his stuff and is out enjoying the hunt for new equipment.

When getting into stereo a number of years ago, I auditioned well over 100 different speakers of all price ranges. I quickly noticed that, even though I have a music degree and I consider my ears pretty good, I couldn't really tell the difference between "Mid-Fi" and "Hi-Fi" until I got to spending 10's of $1,000. So, I've become a "Mid-Fi" enthusiast. After going through many systems, I settled on combinations of NAD and PSB/B&W. I had all used stuff, much of it vintage, and I've decided I want some of the newer NAD gear (mainly because I'm lazy and want a remote) with a search for different speakers. Speakers seem to make a more pronounced difference than electronics to my ears. I'm leaning toward trying Axioms before I decide. Right now, I've moved my wood shop system to my listening room. It is comprised of old JVC bookshelf speakers, that have no business sounding as good as they do, and a Yamaha Stereo RX-596 receiver. While this is not the best sounding system I've had, it serves very well and I've had it from the beginning.

My listening room is small and crowded. It's 9x11 and serves as an extra bedroom, office and listening room. My speakers have to be shelf mounted because there's no floor space, or stand space for speakers.

The downfall for all the systems I've tried is large choral/orchestra pieces like Carmina Burana, The Messiah and Bach's B minor Mass. This type of music is what I like most. This downfall could be caused by my penchant for mid-fi equipment, but I'm hoping not.

I watch about 6 movies a year, and the TV is not hooked up to outside reception. I became tired of TV many moons ago. The music, however, is on constantly, so, I'm only interested in stereo, two channel.

Well, that's more than you wanted to know about me. I'm sure I'm going to gain a wealth of knowledge here, and hope to see info on NAD amplification combined with Axiom speakers.

Welcome aboard, John.

There's nothing wrong with mid-fi. Heck, I've still got low-fi stuff kicking around that I've collected over the years and given some away to friends and family when I was done with it. Mid-fi has been a step up for me.

Certainly, there is a wealth of knowledge to be gained here.

Thanks for the welcome,

Davemcc, I'll probably be stuck at mid-fi unless my ears start to get younger.

NYyankeeboi, I noticed by your signature line you're 19 - yes, it's tough being 19 now-a-days(I can vouch for that being a retired HS principal), but, if you're only watching that many movies a year you're probably finding more productive things to do with your young life. Congratulations!! (Oh, to be 19 again)

Bookshelf speakers

I was thinking out Axioms but ended up with the Onix Ref 1's from av123.com. They show up regularly in the on their classified page for about $500. They are rear ported so they should have a few inches behind them and a hefty shelf to support the 25 lbs. each.

jc,

This is probably a subject for a different forum, but when you say "a few inches," how far does that mean? I've built two open shelves so the speakers I have now are not enclosed. They are about 5 inches from the wall. Would that be sufficient for the Ref 1's. Whatever speakers I get, I can always build bigger shelves. The shelves are strictly for the speakers and can be pretty much any size.
