RX V 2700 system question, about calibration.

I have a room 25x25x10 W L H, it has windows on two sides, connecting hall with a large entry, wood floors for dancing. I bought everything the stereo shop guy suggested, Paridigm cinema 90's for the corners, cinema 110 LCR for the center, PDR-8 for the Sub. a Yamaha Rx v2700 reciever, and a DVD S1700 player. The system sounds great..(except out of balance) but should I calibrate with the YPOA. I can hook up a Yamaha LPX 510 for the calibration but I think I'll end up selling it for a LCD display to save the relationship. She doesn't want it hanging from the ceiling. Anyway. The center seems to be the dominate channel and I barely here the satellites. What is the best setting for music?? Would you calibrate based on the center of the room, the rear... Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Always calibrate from where you'll be listening.

Just use the YPOA and then go back and manually adjust the speaker size and crossover. Everything else should be pretty close. Later on, if you want, you can use a SPL and Test disc but the YPOA and a couple of manual adjustments will have it sounding good.

Speaker size and crossover

Thanks Greg
Does the system guess speaker size and crossover freq?
I'm sure once I get the display hooked up and have the GUI guide it will help me, right now it won't do anything except DB level balance control.

For some reason it always gets the crossover and size wrong. I guess it senses the freq response of your speakers and sets accordingly. So if you have some pretty decent speakers in this area it will sense them and set them to lg. If you are using a sub you want all speakers set to small. It always sets my crossover way off.

You can check all settings in the front display of the Yammy but it is much easier on screen.

Crossover freq

I read in the review of it to set the Sub crossover at around 35 does that make a difference, I know I have it turned down on the back of the sub and it sounds like I should turn it back up and control it with the RX v2700.

I think the best option is to trade me that 2700 for my 659 before you hurt yourself...lol...

Turn your sub's crossover as high as it will go or disable it if that is an option and then set the crossover in the 2700 (or the 659 if we trade). I am not sure where you got the 35 hz crossover setting but that is way too low. There is a lot of info on setting up your sub on here if you want details but you can usually just set it between 70 and 90hz and you will be fine unless you have some really big speakers that go really low or some really small sat speakers that wont go low at all.

Ouch

Trade!!!!
I'm sure mine will work Great.
I saw this in the review by Gene
(I defeated YPAO and engaged into manual EQ edit mode where I attempted to tweak in the 30 to 40Hz range by choosing the lowest possible center frequency Yamaha would allow for (fc = 31Hz) and adjusting Q to 3.13 with a slight gain of +2dB.)

But now I see he is talking about the center.

Anyway I'm new to this lingo. but should pick it up well enough.

I'm willing to trade my LPX-510. but I don't need two recievers.

Thanks for your time Greg, I'll let you know my outcome.

Yep; I just looked at the review and was about to tell you what it was aying in that section.

Just do the auto cal and fix the size and crossover and give it a listen; It will sound awesome and then you can begin tinkering around with it from there. I found it very useful to keep the manual in the bathroom so I could read up on it every morning. It makes more sense everyday.

I recently picked up the 1700 attached to some Monitor-7's and PDP-12. During auto-setup it set these to Large and had crossover set to 80hz. I had read previously that if you have a subwoofer you should set your mains to small and crossover to 80hz so that the amp sends the signals to the subwoofer. If the crossover is already set to 80, what other effect does speaker size have? Am I better off setting the monitor-7's to small?

thanks

I read the same thing in Gene's review

So I'd agree that the thing to do.
