I have come down to two choices the avr2807 and avr3806, After reviewing both receivers the only difference that I have seen between the two are that the 3806 has 10 watts per channel more and has 3 room zone setup. The 3806 is about 200 bucks more then the 2807. The 2807 has the analog to hdmi upconversion and is the newer model of denon receiver. Also the 2807 has been chosen as the best receiver for 1000 bucks buy CNET. So in your opinon which receiver should I buy.

The 10 wpc difference is inaudible. If you have no need to for 3 Zones then the 2807 is the better buy.

Simplly stated and right to the point.

You're looking at bells and whistles, not performance improvements.

No I am not really looking for bells and whistles, I was just comparing the 2. Do you think the 3806 has better sound output by having a 10 watts per channel difference over the 2807? Because I am really looking for a richer and fuller sound, I currently have an Onkyo which is approx. 6 yrs old which I'm looking to upgrade. Besided these 2 receivers that I am comparing do you recommend any other brands that will be comparable to the 2 denon's that I have listed.

Thanks

There can be a very noticable difference in 10-15 watts if the lesser of the two has a very different power supply. I found this quite apparent when I went from my former Marantz 6200 to my current 8300, which is only a 15w difference, but let me tell you the difference was immediately noticeable. There is about a 10lb difference between the two because the 8300 has a much larger power supply and it showed.

If it were me, I would go with the 2807 simply because it has better HDMI capability which would presumably serve most better going forward.

The 2807 has the analog to hdmi upconversion and is the newer model of denon receiver.
The 3806 also upconverts all analog video signals to HDMI. It also has the burr-brown DACs where the 2807 doesn't, but the 3806 does lack the iPod input capability that the newer models have. There are old threads buried in the forum discussing these two receivers, I remember b/c I posted in them, try a search and you can find more input on it. Also, you can get the 3806 for $1000 from an authorized dealer, maybe even less now.

The 3806 i think also has a larger power supply and is isolated or something like that.

The 3806 also has Denon's AL24 processing on all channels - the 2807 only has it on the front left and right channels.

there is a new version of the 3806 (3808) that is supposed to be coming out this year... Not sure when you were planning on purchasing

In both cases the amps have the ability to assign power amps to "front" for bi-amping the front speakers as long as you do not have the need for the surroundback channels.

The 3806's Audessy MultiEQ can help to optimise for multiple seating positions, and I believe it can provide some EQ for the Sub as well, so this may provide the easiest route to a well balanced system.

Both units have Audyssey (in response to the previous poster). That is an amazing EQ system and makes the Denon's well worthwhile.

The AL24 processing on all channels is indeed a plus to the 3806.

The DACs are IMO, not that significantly different spec-wise. But the 2807 uses Analog Devices and the 3806 uses Burr Brown if you do believe in or care about such things.

The 2807's HDMI implementation is much better than the 3806's. If you're going to have a modern video setup and want 1080p passed, get the 2807. Also, the 2807 will deinterlace a 480i signal which is important since a vast number of sets don't accept 480i over HDMI. The 2807 also supports 7-channel PCM over HDMI right out of the box.

The power supply difference is absolutely inconsequential. In response to the previous poster who attributed a vast difference in two receivers to a 15 watt increase in power... rest assured what he heard had nothing to do with the power rating. It would be exceedingly rare for any home user to ever use more than 10 watts/channel in their home theatre and even that would be deafening on speakers with an average efficiency.

I say go with the 2807 and save the money. It's a beautiful unit.
