I have just set up me new HD cable box. Its a SA explorer 8300 box.I hooked up the optical audio from the "out" of the cable box to the reciever for surround sound. My problem is I can't control the volume from the cable remote.I need to use the remote for the reciever. If i run the red and white audio cables from the cable box to tv,and then optical from the tv to reciever, will i get the same sound quality?

It won't work. The TV will not convert the analog audio input to digital and output it over the digital out jacks. The digital out on a TV is solely for the case where you use the TV as a tuner and it receives digital audio.

dont know about the 8300box, but with my 3200box i had to get a code from rogers that would let me use the volume control in the rogers remote.

Is there no way to program a receiver into the remote? I work with Comcast Motorola DVR's every day and they have an "aux" function on the remote where a receiver can be programed in and the volume locked to the receiver. I would think your remote would have something similar.

ya you get the code from your company and program it in to the cbl button.then set the reciever volume and use the volume control in the cable box.or you can program the reciever that way also.i just use the clb 1 cause it,s easyer to change channels, you dont have to go back and forth to the funtion buttons.

And there's nothing to be controlled. It's not the amplified analog signal, you're just sending the digital bitstream to your receiver which does the processing and amplification. So, why would you expect to control it through STB remote ?

Good point.

Why not try to plug in a code to control your receiver's volume with the remote.

I guess that means it has a fixed output only and no option for variable? If it has an option for variable out, you should be able to control it via the STB remote, or is that for analog only?

I don't think any STB has variable digital output.

Then again, I learn stuff every day.

We use our remote to control the volume on out TV but I ran the video aoutputs directly to the TV as well as rhge red/white analog feed from the STB. Both (different - 1 HD, one simply digital) Comcast/Motorola STB's have no problem controling the volume on the TV when configured like this. IOW, it doesn't control the volume at the STB. It does it at the TV via a supplied code.

Of course, the remote doesn't do squat for the digital feed to the recceiver.
