excuse me guys, but please tell me what are the best formats for playing dvd movies (5.1) and music on the avr-3806? they sometimes seem confusing.

I think I understand the question, but not exactly? Listen to the format that is on the disc - you don't need to further process these, they should sound fine as is. Put the receiver on auto, choose DD/DTS or DD-EX, DTS-ES on the disc and enjoy.

Some say DTS is better, some say Dolby Digital is better. The general consensus here is this; they are both good in their own right. Depending on what movie you watch either of the formats could be better. Sometimes it is DTS and sometimes it is Dolby Digital. Fight Club has a very good Dolby Digital track, better than most DTS tracks I have heard elsewhere. Jurasic Park has a good DTS track on a special edition. Don't let anyone lead you to believe that DTS is better no matter what, because that is crazy nonsense. DTS has a reputation for being better, and they have the potential to be very good, as well does Dolby Digital.

Just listen for yourself, and you be the judge.

Entirely up to you, as it is completely a personal preference. I listen in stereo or direct and never PLII - just my preference.

I prefer CD music in prologic or the new PL II. Gives that space feeling, plus a solid center soundstage. It is really great when you know you have a singer center stage and they are in the center channel no matter what

I use to flick between 'Stereo' and 'PLIIx'. Now I pretty much only listen in PLIIx. It just sounds nicer to me, a bit more spacial depth and soundstage, and now and then you get some music that you'd swear it was mixed in multichannel and you were playing the 5.1 mix Although you do get some that sound like junk, like its mono and only coming from the center channel

How so? If your speakers are set to small, bass goes to the sub.

And if we talk about stereo music, it is about left and right speaker right?
So if our music has a guitar sound from the left speaker, how can we hear it, if we set in PLIIx? Since all sound gathered in center speaker...

Maybe you have some bass management issues at play here.

Not all sound gathers in the center speaker, it depends on the mix, but if it comes from left in stereo it will still come from the left in PLIIx.

With PLII you should have a 'Movie' and a 'Music' mode. When you listen to music put it in music mode and then you can change the 'center width' which will adjust whether the sound in front of you comes from the center only, fronts only, and increments in between.

The ability to spread the sound with center width allowed me to tailor the sound better with music, but I really still just prefer to listen in stereo most of the time. For stereo DVDs, of which I have quite a few, mostly Japanese anime series, I always use PLII.

PLII Music mode with the default settings is pretty much identical to PLII Movie, but with Music mode you get to set Dimension, Center Width, and Panorama.

I use PLII Music for everything.

You should try 1812 Overture on Telarc
As was mentioned, not all sound is in the center speaker in PLII or prologic. Only the sound that is supposed to be there, on center stage.

How about the thought that if you have really nice speakers, your imaging will likely sound like its coming from the center anyways... in stereo, or Direct Mode. Maybe Im talking out my A$$ here, but I not really one for adding processing to the mix when a CD is made for stereo listening. But thats just me..

Now SACD? Isn't some of that made for multichannel? I don't have any of those nor have I heard them yet...

I prefer pure direct mode or straight mode, if I want to use the sub.

My S.O. always uses one of the enhancers like "roxy" but then again, I caught her putting the AVR in sleep mode last night when it was time for bed. She thought it meant it was time to go to sleep so you put the AVR in sleep mode to turn it off. Man, I wish see would read the manual...lol...

Just to add something else, if the music I play is not very loud, sometimes the "auto on" feature on my sub does not kick in.
