I am thinking of upgrading my reciever to one that has HMDI upscaling as my HDTV only has one DVI imput.I can't quite decide what reciever to buy.Yamaha has been good but are there any other companies with good video upscaling?

My personal opinion is that I would wait till this format war, and HDMI 1.3 stuff is sorted out instead of spending $900 on a receiver now. Again just my opinion.

I very much agree here BUT if the op decides to upgrade now make sure you check out Onkyo. Personally, I own a Pioneer 1015 and am NOT planning on upgrading any time soon. I use the 5.1 analog outs on my Toshiba A-1 HD DVD player and run them to the multi-chhannel inputs on my 1015. By doing so, I am not missing out on much w/respect to lossless audio via DDPlus and TrueDD. However, once the format wars end and the HDMI 1.3 stuff is more readily available then I will upgrade. Good luck in your decision. Be sure to let us know what you decide and how it all turns out for you if you do upgrade now. My Sony 40" LCD has only (1) HDMI input and it is enough for me -at least for now. However, analog cable looks decent but when watching dvds the picture will blow you away. Personally, I would wait as mazersteven advised.

1.3 is nice but you forget about multichannel LPCM.:D It is probably just as nice and the decoders inside the players are pretty darn good.:)

You could get the Yamaha from this member,

They are asking $650
Hey Seth would you care to explain a bit more about the LPCM??? I am not real clear here in what you are implying. Sounds like you are a more up on the changes that are coming.

The HD-DVD players and Blu-ray players decode True HD and DTS-HD internally and can be output over analog 5.1 outputs or HDMI using Linear PCM. The difference should be almost neglegible between 7.1 LPCM and True HD, the only difference would be where it is decoded.:)

Waiting for 1.3 is kind of silly because not only can we get high resolution audio via 7.1 LPCM, but we also get our 1080p. I don't expect the first lines of 1.3 able receivers to have any better decoding than the HD players they have now.:)

Can it be output over analog 7.1 as well? So you are saying if I used LPCM over HDMI with my current Yamaha RX-V1600 I would be able to hear the True HD or DTS-HD in it's true 7.1 form, not just 5.1 right?

Should be, the players don't have 7.1 analog output unfortunetely.:( The PS3 and 360 add-on and the Toshiba HD-A2 don't have even 5.1 analog output, they use HDMI exclusively for high resolution 7.1 LPCM.

You will notice that most if not all the Blu-ray titles have 7.1 LPCM listed as one of the formats.:)

Yeah, I just checked it out, the only player with 7.1 analog outputs is the new upcoming Panasonic Blu-Ray player. http://www.onecall.com/ProductDetails.aspx?id=84961 And the XBOX 360 HD-DVD add one drive doesn't have HDMI out, it just connects to the 360 via USB and is output to the receiver via toslink. Although there is a new 360 in the works with a cooloer running processor, 120 GB hard drive, and HDMI, so hopefully that will allow for 7.1 LPCM. Too bad they don't offer a 360 with HDMI and a built in HD-DVD drive as an option, but if they did I'm sure it would cost as much as the premium PS3.
