Hello all, This is my first post on this wonderfully rich source of knowledge and I wonder if anyone can tell me anything about a Philips DVD player...a DVD-941? I received it second hand from someone who no longer used it and I can't find ANY information on the web. Hopefully someone here knows something...price new, quality, problems, tweaks, anything?

No, I saw that one too all over the web but that's not it. It's a philips DVD- 941, DVD/Video CD/CD player. On the other side it says "Match 3 Line" but the 3 is in roman numerals (III) A sticker on the back says "November 2000". The front also has these logos....TruSurround, DTS, and Dolby Digital. My friend doesn't know where she even bought it.

What I'm trying to determine is if I should keep it or buy something newer. It sounds pretty good to me but I have very little experience to base that on as my whole system is new and much better than what I had previously. Especially my 9 year old $99 RCA 5 disc changer.

So should I keep this thing? Is it worthy? ( my new system is a Yamaha RXV659 and Infinity Primus 360's and 150's.

P.S. It does have digital out which I am using.

Interesting. I, for the life of me, could not find anything online regarding a Philips DVD-941.

Well, you know what they say, "if it 'aint broke, dont fix it". If it works for you, be happy... :)

Does it have 5.1 analog outputs? Is it progressive scan? Does it have DVD-Audio and SACD support? Is it heavy?:D

It may be a good player, Philips used to make some really good DVD players and CD players.

Is it bigger than a bread box?:)

Well lets see.....It has a little display on the front showing the front and surround speakers and which are active so I guess it has 5.1. It was originally connected via two analog RCA's and now I'm using the digital coax out. Not sure about the DVD audio and SACD. I can't believe there's no info on the web other than a few lists of CD/DVD players that either do or don't play CD-R's, I think..... it doesn't.

It's this basic layout except there's a knob like thing on the right side for FF and skip instead of the buttons, and it's silver.

Is it taller than the unit pictured?
Yup, about another 1/2 inch or so on the top. The space both above the display, and below the door is about equal. Why? Has there been a break in the case of the phantom DVD player?! :)

The knob I described on the right is really a ring that turns and a finger wheel in the middle that doesn't seem to do anything at all....if that helps. There is also a button labeled "Sound" that also seems to have no function.

I'm dying to know whether I've got some limited run high quality piece...or a piece of crap, LOL. The number 941 would seem to indicate a higher level model but it IS 7 years old.

There aren't many DVD-### models, the went on to DVP-#### if I remember correctly. I would look it up in Orion, but I only have the Orion Audio Blue book, the video one is seperate. You could look the unit up for a price at www.usedprice.com, if the model isn't listed they shouldn't charge you. I think you can search for the model before purchasing the information which is limited along with pricing information.

OK, I have learned a little. The unit started production in 2001 according to blue book. The model # includes DVD 941AT. If your model is 7 years old this would be it's predecessor. The player does not play DVD-R and that is all I have found.;)

OK so now that we found it:D What should I do? Is it worthy? Should I upgrade? I mostly use it for audio with the occasional movie or music DVD, and I use the digital coax output. The only problem I've come across is I cant get the on screen menu to come up but I'll look into that more tomorrow. Other than that it's mechanically working fine and dandy.

Do you have the remote control?

It looks to be a decent DVD player. Did you get the manual from the manufacturers website? I forgot to look there.:D

Yes I have the remote and the manual from the site. So are you saying that I have no reason to update to a new unit? Are all my bits and megahertz and whatever up to snuff? I cant tell if it sounds and works good because I updated my whole system at the same time as I got the philips so everything sounds much better than before, as it should. But since I'm using the DAC's in the yamaha RXV659 I just need to know about the rest. I don't know a damb thing about DVD/CD players.

If it works and works well, it doesn't matter what other people think. It is outdated, don't get me wrong. That doesn't discourage me from owning old outdated stuff. I am using a Toshiba SD-9000, which is an 8 year old DVD player. I like it because it is heavy, reliable and puts out an excellent picture. I would say if you enjoy the player and it produces better results than what you had before, then keep it. It wouldn't make any sense if it was better in your opinion but decided to throw it out because someone told you it sucked (which I am not saying at all, Match Line III is supposed to be an upper line if memory serves me correct)

Thanks again Seth. I'm not worried about owning old gear, I bought my last system in 1983! I just upgraded because the speaker surrounds were rotted out and the Yammy receiver wouldn't hold station presets anymore though I probably could have fixed that myself. Other than that the Yamaha never gave me a bit of trouble. Now I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't missing out on any sound quality by not snatching up one of those Oppo's or some other $200 player.

The Oppo would likely fetch better results, but not in leaps and bounds. I wouldn't make another disc player upgrade until there is a clear victor in the format war that is going on right now. (Blu-ray vs. HD-DVD)

OK Chief. What's a good way to isolate one of these things from vibration? I hear that can mess with the optics and it's in a home entertainment center with a tower right on the other side of the cabinet wall. There's nothing I can do about the arrangement at this time so I was wondering if there's an effective way to minimize the pretty serious vibrations I can feel on it when the music's cranking. Last question....honest.

Have you been experiancing problems? If not I wouldn't worry about it. If you are I would start a new thread and someone else could better answer that question.;)
