All channels set to small BUT with 40hz crossover

Preouts will pass through subwoofer 80hz crossover before going back to amplifier and onto the speakers.

LFE subwoofer will still be utilized.

I figure, only the <40hz redirected bass and LFE will go to the main LFE subs.

Setup no.1 will only need 4 subwoofers (plus LFE subs)
Setup no.2 will need 6 subwoofers (plus LFE subs) while this is definitely cooler and better – cost vs. performance should be considered

I'm glad i'm not living near or above you.

2 sub's ok i can imagine but 4 or 6, isn't it a little to mutch for a living room.

Sounds like a great set-up, and I for one would LOVE to hear it. However, does much bass information really get sent to the surrounds?

I would try to put it up to 70 Hz, if you have a steep crossover slope on the receiver. The advantages of smoothed out bass response will only be realized with the bandwidth played across the multiple subwoofers. The higher up you use them, the more bass bandwidth is smoothed. If you happen to be using seperate components or have some other way to connect a line level device between the pre-amplifiers and amplifiers, I would recommend using a Behringer DCX2496 for optimum integration. It can provide for 8th order slopes, allowing for up to 70-80Hz crossover point with no issues, and it can compensate for most response errors not corrected by the multiple LF sources.

I would go for the 6 subwoofers. The more spatially independent LF sources, the better. Besides, considering the combined output of 6 decent value units with 10-12" diameter woofers, you can achieve superior response and output as compared to any single high end subwoofer available.
