choosing the amplifier

Hello,

I'm looking for an amplifier and for my budget I have 2 choices:
AMC 2100
Hafler 9130 series

I have a Vincent Sa-31 preamplifier. As speakers I have Fostex FE206E in horn enclosure.

I want an amplifier easy on the ears and with smooth highs and good bass. The fostex Fe206e highs are already little closed( because I used plywood instead of MDF or chipboard). No valve amplifier, because don't want to wait to warm the valve.

What do you suggest?

thank you

Your speakers will determine almost 90% of the sound if not more, and unless you buy total garbage for amplification (the amps you listed are not garbage) then they will sound the same with either. It is always good however, to purchase an amplifier that can handle difficult loads, which tubes are good for and they aren't an option for you. Tubes will sound different from transistor amps, but the truth be told, most all transistor amplifiers sound the same in almost every respect.:)

yes what do you say it's true. The character of the speaker always remains, but small differences can be heard with different amplifier.

Ok the listed amplifiers aren't garbage, but don't you think AMC 2100 is very cheap to be good? I was thinking my self this, I read some review on audioreview.com but a powet amplifier that cost around $220 with 100W...

Agreed, sonic differences do exist between amplifiers.

As far as the AMC not costing enough i would not worry about that, there are hifi botiques charging premium prices for the same AMC amp your looking at,the only way to know which amp is really going to sound better in your home is to try them both in your system.

I have to ask what amp are you running right now & why you feel its not doing a good job? What are you lacking in your sound?

I also have to ask about your vincent, when your running your current set up are you using the tone controls on the vincent or you leaving them in the off or neutral position? The reason i ask this is that alot of guys bypass using their tone controls in order to keep the signal path pure which in most cases is a huge mistake.

A twist or two from your tone controls will offer way more system flexibility over running different amplifiers, tone controls are not a bad thing.:)

I have not seen your speakers being that they are DIY but from your description of the fostex horn loaded design i'd think speaker placement would be a huge issue in your system. If it were me before i bought any other amplifier i'd experiment heavily with speaker placement & tailoring the sound with the tone controls.

You may have issues stemming from the DIY single driver fostex design that your using that cant be overcome no matter what electronics they are paired with.

I visited different shop in my city, but all power amplifiers were out of my budget and they don't have my speaker to listen.

I'm running with an original t-amp and professional amplifier borrowed from my friend. The t-amp lacks in the bass and highs are very well defined but at high volume is tiring to the ears. With the pro amp the bass in generous but I don't like the highs, the are harsh.

also have to ask about your vincent, when your running your current set up are you using the tone controls on the vincent or you leaving them in the off or neutral position?
neutral, but I tried using it and the the bass became swell, innatural. I didn't tried with the highs.

really placement isn't an issue. Near the wall if you want more bass, simply. Highs don't change. The advantage of placing speaker far from the well si the soundstage.
Changing the angle reduce the highs.

I'm thinking of buying the hafler, I read a massage on google groups.

Someone say amc it's harsh other not. I don't want to risk
