I have a 5.1 speaker system (5 speakers and 1 subwoofer), in the subwooer there are 6 Audio inputs which are compatiable with regular AV cables. i used to have a DVD player which had 6 Audio outputs, so using 2 AV cables (each cable has yellow, red and white cables) i used to connect the DVD player to the subwoofer and get the 5.1 surround Audio.

Now i purchased a DVD recorder which has the following ports:

Digital Audio Out:
1. Optical
2. Coxial

AV OUT:
1. Audio R-1
2. Audio R-2
3. Audio L-1
4. Audio L-2
5. Video
6. S-Video

Component OUT
1. Pr
2. Y
3. Pb

my question is given that there are no 6 Audio outputs unlike my old DVD player, can i connect my new DVD Recorder to my exisiting 5.1 Speaker surround system and still get the 5.1 channel audio?

note: i don't have a receiver or preamplifier and i don't intend to buy any.

Your best bet would be another DVD player with those six analog audio outputs.

Those DVD players with internal decoders and analog outs were popular in the early days of DD and DTS when receivers were being offered "in anticipation" of these as yet to be introduced formats and only had the six analog inputs on the back, no internal decoders. since DDand DTS have become commodities in the marketplace, the need for DVD players to handle this task dwindled and I'm not too sure it's still available, or at least common.

Your new DVD player offers two pairs of stereo analog outputs, both coaxial and toslink digital outs (which are made to go to a receiver for decoding, and a pretty full range of video outs (component, S-video and yellow lack composite)

...but it has no 5.1 analog outputs which you need.

Short of finding another DVD player with those same outputs, you're limited to the stereo signal from the red/white jacks. I really don't know if these are too common anymore and I strongly doubt any DVD recoreders have them, but you might want to look around, though.

But, an inexpensive universal player might work. They requirte analog outs for SACD, DVD-Audio and, I believe many decode DD and DTS internaly as well, but you mightwant to verify this.

Another option is a receiver with preamp outs but that may not be a cost effective solution.

good luck...

Universal DVD players are capable of playing DVD-Audio and SACD and in turn have 6 channel (5.1) outputs. Since DVD-Audio has 5.1 high-rez audio in losseless, they make the player decode the audio because most receivers cannot do this unless they have firewire or HDMI with the proper firmware. Most Universal players decode Dolby Digital and DTS in the DVD player and output it via 6 channel output. Even if you can't find a Universal player in the price range you want you can use a DVD-Audio equiped DVD player (which also will have 6 channel outputs and DTS, Dolby Decoding) and it may cost less. Panasonic comes to mind, they have DVD-Audio capable DVD players on the market for less than $100 in some places on the net.:)
