Want a small subwoofer

In addition to my home theater system in my entertainment room, I have a set of five MK LCR-55 speakers in my small 11 X 11 computer room.

I want to add a high quality (small footprint size) subwoofer that will work well with these speakers.

Will appreciate suggestions.

Thank you.

Matt34, Thank you for your reply.

Not to be facetious, but price is not a consideration. At my age, if I don’t spend it now on things I want, tomorrow may be too late.

However, to be realistic, $200 would be about the most I want to spend on a small sub to go with my small MK’s.

The price makes a BIG difference when looking for a SMALL sub, and at $200 your options are severely limited period. High quality and small tend to also go hand in hand with high(er) cost.

I agree with Matt, the X-sub would be the first place I'd look.

I thank both of you and will check out that sub.

Exactly. With subs, price and size have an inverse relationship. Though that may seem counterintuitive until you understand how hard it is to make a small sub that sounds good. For 2 bones, you really only have a couple of options. The Velodyne Minivee sounded great every time I heard it (on show floors) and it tiny but it is WAY out of your budget.

You can check the DIY route. It will definitely be cheaper than a velodyne. Simply find the highest excursion driver you can that works in a small box. Get a sub amp and parametric eq and you will be all set. :)

Seth, I have enjoyed owning a number of MK subs. Each has improved the listening experience wherever I have placed them.

Specifically, the M&K MX-125 in my 18' X 14' home theater room provides rich quality equally to symphonic CD's as well as to action movie sound tracks on DVD's.

If you are thinking of buying another MK, you better do so quickly. Unfortunately, MK went out of business last month. Product on the shelf is being depleted quite fast.

The S150THX speaker system that I use in my HT space is the finest set of speakers I have ever owned. They are simply magnificent!

You may have already seen this but the low end Hsu is also $250, STF-1. A couple inches bigger than the one that was just posted and the Amp is not listed as high in power (for what that is worth), but they seem to get consistently good reviews. I bought one of their VTF-2s 3 years ago or so and have been very happy with it.

For DIY, I'd recommend looking at this month's project sub at Parts Express, the Triska (13" cube). Should be inexpensive if you have the ability to build the box.

I thought about recommending that, it would be a fun little project and cheap.:)
