JBL 4311B Restoration

So I just scored a pair of JBL 4311Bs for $30 (like stealing!). They need to be "refoamed" around the woofer. What's the consensus on this? Is the cloth absolutely required? Is this a crime against humanity if I foam it? I am unfamiliar with this model other than it is very highly regarded.

I already have restored a set of L112s and they still blow me away.

Thanks!

Welcome to the forum!

Considering that you're a JBL guy, I would suggest you to get all pertinent info you might need at the following site:
www.lansingheritage.com

You'll find tons of good info overthere and also you'll get pretty good advice from senior JBL members as well. Hope this helps.

Cheers.

Side note: no, it's not a crime to re-foam your beloved 4311. Have fun!

If you have any of the variations of the JBL 123A woofer, yes they must have the pleated cloth surround. Do not use foam surrounds for them. Ask at the lansingheritage.com fourm.
