Cheap Sony speakers worth the $?

A non-audiophile friend of mine has his heart set on a pair of floorstanders, and a minimal budget. BB has some Sony's for $150/pr, and that is as cheap as I have seen. Are they worth it at that price, or would he just be flushing his money away?

Tell him to just wait for the Polk Audio R150's go back on sale from outpost. It would only be $100 plus shipping for the pair. Or he can get either the R15 or R150 bookshelfs for $50/pr. plus shipping and have money left over. I would rather have almost anything than Sony.

Tell him, I don't care, Sony make shite for speakers!:D

The Polks would be a much better alternative. If he really thinks large is better tell him to get KLH.

Some of Sony's speakers are decent, but not likely any sold at BB, so I'd skip them.

I'm doing a write up on the X-LS presently.

The Polks aren't bad, but they aren't great either.

I agree. I heard the M20s. They would be worth the $100/pr sale price, but not the $220 that CC gets for them. I will have to go listen to the Sonys, to see how bad they are.

The first pair of speakers i bought was a set of KLH floorstanders that cost me 80 bucks a peice.

If someone wanted to know what to buy for that kind of money and they wanted floorstanders they could just go to a store and bring them home and start playing music I dont think i would feel bad about agreeing that those KLH would be fine.

You have to keep in mind that he probably wont notice that they arent the best sounding speakers available for the money period, But will surely be more than happy with them. For most people a mini system is great, when they buy floorstanders they just want something that plays louder.

UE is advertising closeout Primus 160s for $160/pr. If any of our local stores have some left, that will be my recommendation. I have listened to those, and I think they are much better than the price would suggest. (The 250s are even better, but I don't know if I can talk my friend into spending $240.)
