Wife wants one and we are due for a new bed. I like the idea of being able to independently adjust each side since I generally like a firmer bed than she does. Are they worth the money?

That's what I'm thinking, I see the top of the line models run $5000.
All I can think about is all the audio and car stuff I can buy for that. I ask because reading the reviews on epinions is no help. It's pretty much 50/50 on what people think about them.
I told her the memory foam types are out, stuff makes me sweat.

...top o' the line Sealy Back Support (not pillowtop)...~$1500 for king size mattress and box springs last time I looked. It won't break down as soon as others. They genuinely support their warranty...which is unusual in the bidness!Matt34 said:

Get a good, pillow top mattress. I was lucky enough to get a nice new one maybe 5-8 years ago, and it's great. You don't need a motorized bed to sleep well, you just need to be tired.

anyway, matt ... i've always been complaining about back pains since as far as I remember, I have to sleep on my side to relieve it a bit, but since one of my arms is squished, I have to keep turning during sleep.
enter: tempur, when I got married, I got me a tempur mattress and I've never had the back pains again. (except of course when staying in hotels) now, it's entirely possible this is due to other factors, but hey ...
after the success of the mattress, I bought the matching pillows and then got neck pains the first few nights (adjustment) ... but now I don't notice it anymore.
in the end, the mattress gave me the most comfort.

We currently have a S&F and love it. It's firm and has a plush pillow top. Freakin' thing is huge. Had to create a inner frame that's lower than the four poster frame just so the wife can get into bed. They do make special "low profile" box springs to use with these over 18" high mattresses, though.
EDIT: Oh, don't look at the price tags! These aren't the cheapest brands. Just remember how many hours a day you spend in bed and then decide how much that time is worth.

I've tried a sleepnumber in the store. I wasn't impressed with their sub-$2,000 models. I went with a high quality locally made factory direct brand mattress and added a 4" 5.5lb/sqft memory foam topper and life is good. The mattress sales lady said dont spend the extra money on pillow=tops because they wear out. Instead she recommended eBaying a topper. I bought a a 4" thick 5.5lb/sqft tempor quality king topper for around $250 shipped on ebay. The weight per sqft is the key. You will still need a good quality mattress pad because memory foam does not breath and therefore gets pretty hot in the summer.

We have a kingsdown mattress and I love it.
My wife bought some kind of goose down feather bed (think of it as a pillow top) as well as a goose down blanket/duvet (not sure what the right terms are - pampering stuff is wife's dept.)
I swear you feel like you're sleeping in heaven. Don't know if it's true or not but supposedly the goose down helps regulate body temp - stores/releases heat.
The only problem is we have to get "deeper pocketed" bedsheets because the the feather bed on top of the mattress but underneath the mattress cover. In the summer we don't use the goose down duvet but we still use the goose down feather bed i and wouldn't think of sleeping otherwise. Just awesome!
My only other recommendation would be to get separate beds but i doubt you want to consider that.

Like speakers, mattresses must be personally auditioned. (And many stores will let you try them out for 30 days or so and allow a return if you're disatisfied.)
Personally, I'd avoid pillow-top mattresses as they lose their support quickly, certainly within the first year or two and form large body cavities...not comfortable or good looking...especially if you're considering a kingsize. If you have any issues at all with back or neck pain, go with a FIRM bed and avoid the down-filled and other soft boutique beds.
After life on a military cot, a lump of bricks is likely to feel better to you, but just go with quality and a long warranty.

We have had the sleep number for a couple years and like it. We got it at the begining of the year and purchased the previous years premium model (3" of memory foam, etc.) for the price of the new basic model. I guess they changed the color of the plastic on the remote. The cost was comparable to the quality traditional matresses we were considering. I have alergies which also makes this type of matress a plus.
I keep my number around 30-40 which is comparable to a regular pillowtop matress. My wife adjusts hers periodically between 20 and 50. You cant do that with a regular matress.
