Thoughts on Pioneer Elite receivers

Just a general question really. I see a lot of mention of Denon and Yamaha, probably due to their tons of capabilities at certain price points. I've owned H/K, Denon and Marantz, and have recently been interested in perhaps taking an Elite receiver for a drive to replace my Denon 786s. I'm just curious though; when looking at the Elites, they appear to have a lot of offerings too, but I don't see them mentioned quite as much. I'm not reading into that at all...could easily be personal preference. I was just wondering everyone's thoughts on them. Is it just that you can get equal performance for less from others, or is it simply popularity? Meaning, are the Pioneer Elites on par, both in terms of price and performance, but the others (Denon, Yammy) are just a more popular choice? Just curious. Thanks for any input.

I've owned every brand receiver that you mentioned with the exception of Mazantz. I think that they all make a fine receiver, thought the Harman's are a bit flakey. My last two have been Pioneer with current (about a month old) being the Elite VSX-82TXS. If I could pick and choose features from all of the brands, I could probably make the perfect receiver. But for now I am very happy with the Pioneer.

My Elite is 2 lines removed, and a complete redesign away. I have the 54 which I guess occupied the same spot as the current 82. When this unit was made, Pioneer was using mosfet technology in their power amps. I love this piece. The power is awesome, the sound is smooth. I love my 54. At the time, the combo of feature/value was excellent. After spending a couple of days in a couple of Tweeters, I chose the elite over the Yamaha 2500 & the Denon 3805.

I can't speak to the current design of the Elites. The review that Audioholics gives of one of the new models is interesting & revealing. Visually the Elites are easily the best looking. I liked the remote of my 54 better than the 3805, though apparently some of the current elite remotes are lackng.

Bottom line: if you like it, buy it. Then spend your time listening and enjoying and not searching the net for people to validate your decision, or trying to convince yourself you made a mistake. It's a good piece, but only you can decide if it's best for you.

Enjoy,
X

I've got an Elite VSX-72TXV that I got last year when they first came out. I believe it has been replaced with the 82. I remember researching receivers & looking at this & the Yamaha RX-V2600. I found lots of stuff here about the Yamaha, but not too much on the Elites. After alot of listening & messing around at my local Tweeter, I decided to take the Pioneer home. I thought they were both extremely capable for my needs & I liked the sound/features of both. I really think I would have been fine with either one. I just went with my gut feeling to get the Pioneer. It also helped that the Pioneer was about $100-cheaper, but that wasn't the primary driving force of my purchase. Of course if I changed my mind, they said I could return the the Pioneer for the Yamaha within 30-days. So, I figured I had nothing to lose. The Pioneer was so much better than the Sony STR-DE875 it replaced, it never left my house. I think it's awesome & I'm still enjoying it. I believe audioholics just did a review of the Pioneer Elite VSX-82. I believe it performed well. But as someone said earlier, if you like what you hear, buy it. I liked what I heard from the Pioneer & I'm still loving with it.

Actually they aren't mine. A Friend who is an engineer for some radio stations let me use them. They were free, but they must return home one day. Once I get the cash, ( & decide on what speaker package I want to go after) I will return them and put up my new system.

You can probably find a pair at a yard sale or flee market for less than $25.

Hey Corey;
Curious as to what the 786 may be lacking for you. Could just be upgradeitis, I suffer too often from that myself :D, but if it's something in particular it doesn't deliver that you're looking to get from a different receiver, I'd be curious to know... -TD

Hey Tom, you got it. Let's call a spade a spade – this is total upgradeitis. I truly cannot say that the 786 lacks anything. It has all of the pre-reqs I wanted, but I just want something new. I went through a period of moving for my wife's job and spotty freelance which forced me to sell a lot of my equipment. That included selling my beloved Marantz SR8400. Now that I'm back in the game, with a full-time gig, I want to get what I really want, not just something that would suffice. Probably doesn't make sense to do so as I couldn't really ask anything more of the 786. But I'd sure love to re-buy another SR8400, or perhaps a higher end Denon/Yamaha/Pioneer Elite. The bug's got me! :D

Well, I just picked up my Elite 84 today. I only have two authorized dealers in my area, lowest either would go was $1,299.00 (which comes to $1,377.00) with tax! It also didn't help that neither of the authorized dealers can keep these things in stock!

In any event, while I may not be overly experienced in the audio visual scene, I am extremely experienced in research (attorney by profession). I researched receivers so much in detail and for so long, if a client were paying me, my bill would easily be more than $40,000.00. While I also researched speakers and subwoofers, the receiver was the only category that had a hands down indisputable winner - the Pioneer Elite.

Before Denon and Yammy fans get upset, let me qualify the above. First of all, I am not saying that either Denon and/or Yammy are not also exceptional receivers. Secondly, I am looking at a price point of about $1,500.00. Lastly, my research is centered on this particular point in time. What I mean by this is that it is not uncommon that for a year or two, Denon may have one of the best products on the market. Then that will switch to Yammy or Pioneer as each company keeps trying to play "keep up with and/or beat the Jones'" Currently, the current line Pioneer Elites are exceptional receivers at a very reasonable price point. Comparison wise, they beat just about anything in their price range and compare to far more expensive models. This does not however mean that next year this will not change.

Pioneer has had a sorted history. While never really producing garbage, it never seemed to be able to gain the respect that either the Denon or Yammy line did. Every so often, Pioneer would hit the nail on the head with one or two of its products, but this seemed somewhat haphazard. However, the current line of Elites, was no mistake.

Pioneer intentionally set out to do exactly what they did. By seeking out the likes of THX and Air Studios, they actually received the advice and assistance that it needed to produce a truly exceptional product. Pioneers have always received good reviews for producing a warm, natural sound and has made a great effort to gain respect in the lower priced high-end market. You can't go wrong with the Pioneer right now. However, to be honest, you probably can't go wrong with the Denon or the Yammy either.

Of course the above comes from countless hours of research, more "expert" opinions than I can count, reviews and trade journals, but not from experience (yet). Mine has not made it out of the box (just the manual). It will actually probably live in there for at least a few weeks until my speakers and sub arrive. I will say this however, from a novice at this, I do find the Pioneer somewhat intimidating. So many controls and settings, I am still overwhelmed and can't even imagine how I will pick the right settings in order to get best sound (but I'm only on page 32 of a 90 manual!). And now (after reading this thread) I'm little upset at apparently paying $400 more than I had too!

In any event, the above is obviously just my opinion - well, actually its really other peoples' opinions that I have used as my own - but opinion nonetheless. However, I really think you will be hard pressed to find a better receiver, in today's market, for a better price.

82 vs 84

Is there a big difference in audio quality between the 82 and 84. I have Klipsch Reference series speakers. I really only need 3 HDMI inputs. Is 84 worth the more money?

While features are important, sound quality is paramount.

I'm pretty excited, my local CI shop is letting me demo the 82 for 2days this weekend! Bradley, do you not have nay speakers kicking around? i would recommend hooking the unit up and getting to know it before your new speakers arrive. this way you can tinker around with settings and get an idea of the best set up, so wont be dissapointed by something that is lacking(it actually takes awhile to get things set just right) when your new speakers arrive. will also give you an idea how much better your new speakers are, as you will be able to compare having used the same reciever.

Definately not a bad recommendation but I really can't hook it up to what I'm using now. My speakers will be in soon, its the subwoofer that may take longer. I can't wait!
