Old TV + New Streamer Question

I have an old tv that doesn’t like to process streaming data anymore. It’s a Sony Bravia 850C from 2016. Incoming data via Ethernet will not load or cause freezing of the app and often we will see buffering lag and complete crashes. Our newer TVs do not do this.

We have retired this 850C, but a friend wants it.

Can anybody answer if something like a Roku will act as the streaming device and just send an AV signal to the TV and bypass the TV’s own streaming processing?

Does USB input matter or should it be HDMI only?

Thanks in advance!

I don’t see why a Roku box wouldn’t work, since it’ll be doing its own processing. If you had things connected to the TV’s HDMI inputs before and everything worked, seems all the more likely that a Roku would work, too.

I have 2 smart TV's and and old Panny Plasma dumb TV that all have streamers. In particular a Roku Ultra goes to the Panny Plasma. The smart TV's have a NVidea Shield TV and an Amazon Fire TV.

I thought that's what the streamers were for: to add the smart feature or improve upon an existing smart feature.

Not gonna lie... never used an external streamer! ;)

The Lady kicked me off that 850C a long while back which was when I set up in my own room. I was always able to use the TV for Streaming and had everything else connected as sources through the AVR prior to that.

Never had an issue with any of the HDMI while I was using it, and she never plugged anything else into that TV.

I just wanna make certain if she drives this 2hrs to help our friend with a broken foot that it won't be a for naught. :)

Thanks guys!
