Do your son a favor and stop thinking that amp brands/models are magically different. Why old gear?

Are you shopping for nostalgia for yourself or quality gear for your son? While you can find nice vintage gear, you're gambling with the shape they're in. Yamaha makes some nice integrated amps currently and offer options for some bass management, which none of the older gear can without adding more components and even then we don't know the measurements and if they impart distortion or noise.

You haven't mentioned what speakers he will use, which would be helpful, and If you're looking for a piece of history for your son, roll the dice and see what happens. My father-in-law (ex) still loves his Hafler, Lafayette, JBl, EV, and Heathkit products, hard to get him to update any of them, lol. I sold off all my old McIntosh gear for two reasons, one the amps were too heavy to lift, and I made nice profit for purchasing current gear.
