have got a buckeye amp (3ch) to power front 3 on yamaha a8, but doesn't seem to produce sound, are the configuration options for connecting a power amp the only way to make it work?
have tried them all and still no joy, any advice would be welcome.

You need a new receiver. Your receiver only has zone preouts, but not main and center preouts. So you can not connect your power amp in the way you want.

Says under pre outs fronts and centre along with the others, but doesn't say zones apart from in the configurations, eg 7.2.4 and zone 2.
Can't get a straight answer from yamaha themselves so am about ready to get an avm70, but that will cost.

If it’s an A8A, there is a full compliment of pre outs, as well as zone 2/3. So you should have no problems. It also has xlr pre outs.

So, Yamaha RX-A8A? Buckeye Purifi 1ET6525SA? RCA to XLR cables for Fronts and Center? XLR for Fronts? Tried the “Basic” speaker configuration?

Yep found the pre outs which i've connected the rca's to, and the xlr's into the amp as well as the speaker wire, set the switch on amp to on as per what dylan said, and switched all on and the only sound comes from the two rears.
In the "power amp assign" options on the reciever it gives various random comfigurations but none work.
Asked yamaha and they just pointed out one of those options which of course does nothing.
Crazy to think yamaha's top model does'nt let you power the fronts.

Had it on basic speaker configuration first before i tried the others, your right on the setup and have connected the rca's/xlr's, so either i've missed something (checked everything thats possible) or the avr does'nt support it which doesn't really make sense.

What is the speaker configuration exactly? 5.1? 7.1? 5.1.4? 7.1.4? What was the input source and signal used to test sound output?

Speaker config is 5.1 and used sky (sat tv) for the source.

It should be straight forward to connect the power amp's XLR inputs to the RX-A8A's XLR pre outs, so I can only think of two possibility:

- You have the RX-A8A's XLR outputs and inputs mixed up (unlikely, as it would be obvious by now, but...

- Something got messed up, so maybe do a factory reset and then start from the beginning.

- The unit is defective, unlikely as well..

Exactly my thinking, it should be straight forward, although i've connected rca's into the reciever and xlr's into the amp.
It should be an easy process buts somethings amiss somewhere, dylans tried troubleshooting but apart from the switch (which i had on auto and he advised on)
Which brings me to the conclusion that this reciever doesn't do it.

To be clear, did you mean if you use a rca to xlr (avr rca to power amp xlr) cable then it would work?

Nope, my reciever has rca pre outs and the amp xlr's, which is how its connected, found a thread on avsforums and one of the companies dylan advised was cables matters so got a rca to xlr male to male.

As @PENG mentioned, a factory reset might be in order. The Basic setup will be the default setting. Just turn OFF any speakers beyond your 5.1 configuration.

That's what I meant. So you are good to go, but XLR to XLR should work too.

Theres pre outs for xlr inputs? Didn't realise that, although the rca's still should work especially at 3ft.
Going to send it back to dylan to test the amps, am in the uk so a bit of a pita, although i didn't think this would be an issue tbh.

There are both input and output xlr jacks on the A8A receiver, use the ones marked pre-out if using an xlr to xlr cable. Or just use an rca pre-out to xlr input on the amp with an rca to xlr cable.
