LFE or No LFE

Hello,

My AVR is a Sony STR AN1000, with twin LFE sub output. It also has an option to turn LFE on or off to the sub. When ON, the lowpass filter is set to 120Hz for LFE.

My speakers are DefTech ProCinema 600's. Both amp calibration and DefTech's recommendation sets these speakers to small with a crossover at 120Hz.

My new SVS SB-1000 Pro is due to arrive tomorrow. It has a frequency response of 20 to 270 Hz. Can't wait for it to arrive.

So... in my mind anyway... with LFE on and a lowpass cutoff at 120 Hz, doesn't this mean that my sub will produce nothing in the 120 to 270 Hz range? And with both sub and speakers set to 120 Hz, will this integrate well?

What happens if I turn LFE off? Then I'm essentially sending full spectrum of frequencies to the sub, is that correct? And what will the sub do with that? Attempt to output anything under 270 Hz? Filter out higher frequencies? Would this improve integration with the additional frequencies?

The typical content in the LFE channel is limited to 120hz, so a normal setting for LPF of LFE. It's not a lowpass filter for bass management, tho....your crossover determines that.

LFE (Low Frequency Effect) is extra content used in some movies for special effects (like gun shots) and intended for the subwoofer. Leave those settings alone.

The LFE channel is separate from any bass management where low frequencies for other speakers are directed to the subwoofer.

Ahhhh... DUH... got it... separate media channel. If I'm listening to music, LFE is irrelevant (since it's probably not a coded channel in music streams) and the frequencies passed to the sub are dependent upon amp settings

Little music uses the LFE (.1) channel...some dvd/sacd/bluray content (and a lot of the older stuff just is 4.0) and suppose it may be present in streaming Atmos mixes. Most music is simply 2.0 and bass management will depend on your soundfield settings for crossover (a crossover is a combination of a high pass filter for the speakers and low pass filter for the sub, i.e. where the filter slopes "cross over"). Some avrs can have speakers set to large and use the LFE channel as well (an LFE+Main type setting)....don't think your Sony offers that....

You mostly find use of LFE in movies, but I do have some multi-channel SACD that uses the subwoofer channel. And that is to implement bass management with a cross-over at 60 Hz. :facepalm:

Good advice on the AVR settings. One of the great things about your SVS sub is the control you’ll have on their app including the cross over setting. I had one SB 1000 Pro and then went with two. You may find yourself doing the same depending on your room setup Especially with the dual sub outputs. if you have any questions about your sub setup you can call SVS and talk to a live person. No AI chatbot for now. Their customer service is excellent. Enjoy!

Crossover on the sub? The sub is providing a high pass filter for the speakers? Otherwise it's just the usual low pass filter....
