NAD 705 volume issue from remote

Hi all,

Just picked up NAD 705 for a nice deal. Looks practically new and appears to function very well, just needs the backlight replaced (common issue but I have an LED ready to go).

I'm using a universal remote and the functions work, but the volume has an anomaly. I can hear the motor noise inside the unit trying to raise/lower the volume when the up/down keys are pressed, which tells me the remote is working as it should.

Problem is, the volume level does not change at all and the front panel knob on the front does not turn. However, when you turn the knob by hand the volume changes just fine but the pot is very "stiff" (although this might be normal).

Any thoughts, pretty please? Thanks!!

Sounds like the drive is broken. You will have to open the unit up to find the cause. At a guess I suspect the volume control is seizing up and has broken the drive. I suspect you may have to install a new volume control and repair the drive.

Thanks for the reply. Kinda what I was afraid of, but I'm a bit of a noob so I thought getting the most advice possible was the best course.

A general search for parts doesn't turn up many results, so hopefully opening up the receiver will yield some useful numbers. Again, thanks for weighing in!

It suggests a potential mechanical failure within the motorized volume control mechanism. Specifically, a broken or dislodged gear could prevent the motor from effectively turning the volume knob. This issue has been observed in similar situations, where internal gears within the motorized assembly fail, leading to such anomalies.
You can start by carefully opening the receiver's casing to inspect the volume control mechanism for any visible signs of damage, such as broken gears or misaligned components. If you identify a broken gear or another mechanical issue, you have a few options. You can attempt to repair broken gears using specialized adhesives or by fabricating replacement parts

This is very helpful, thank you.

There is a reputable vintage audio tech in my area, and I'm thinking about just having him do a comprehensive service on it instead of poking around myself. His rate of $185 is over twice what I paid for the receiver LOL, but he did say that there's a very good chance he could remedy the volume issue and the other following issues for that rate.

The display bulb needs to be changed, and it has recently exhibited intermittent, rapid dropouts in output before fully warming up (I've since just kept the power on 24/7 and it hasn't been a problem).
