Are 5:1 Home Theatre Systems Still a Thing?

Hi All,

I'm just curious if 5.1 theatre systems are still a thing or did they get replaced by soundbars? Sorry if that's a dumb question I'm a complete noob. I've been delegated a task of selling a Luxitech L-88 sound design 5.1 home theatre system for a friend. She never even opened it, still brand new in the box. I guess she went with a sound bar or something.

So I looked it up and I guess it was top of the line in 2019. But I can't find a single one on ebay so I'm not sure what the asking price for a system like that should be. Hoping some experts would chime in.

Thanks in advance!

If she paid more than a 100 bucks, she got taken.
If you can get 20 bucks, consider yourself lucky.

Yes, cheap knockoff crap is still a thing.

Oh man...so she's about to get some bad news. Her father actually got it for her but she never used it. So Luxitech is a knockoff brand or something? I think her dad told her he paid $3,000 bucks for it.

I can't speak for the brand but as for 5.1, it's all that I need, or want.........

If he actually did pay 3000 for that, I don't know whether to laugh or cry.
Even 200 dollars would trigger the same response. ;)

Not to stereotype, but they're Hindu...and I'm thinking what likely happened is he purchased it "from the back of a white van" like the other poster pointed out, and he told his daughter that he paid $3,000. I'll let her down gently. I don't think she was trying to get anywhere near that amount. She's a rich girl and it was sitting around her garage for years and she's doing a little de-cluttering. Thanks, my dude.

Hehe. it says "500w sub" but in the specs it says 8", 30w, 35Hz @ +/-3dB which usually means it is less than -3dB at 35. Hardly "remarkable".

As someone mentioned in your other thread (and one is enough) it's generally referred to as HTIB (Home theater in a box). Soundbars have probably displaced a bunch of these. Some are okay, but mostly not worth bothering with. That one you mention was never top of the line anything :)

You know, honestly. I had my doubts and I guess that's what brought me here. When I started researching the brand and a single hit came up saying it was worth $3,000 bucks, a few red flags popped up. But I'm glad you guys confirmed it. One reason I love the internet is forums like these.

.. try to let her expectations down gently...
I say; try it out and see if the sound is at all acceptable then use it (If it doesn't stink) and gradually (as money becomes available) up grade it with at least mid range performance equipment (on sale or good functional used).

In my experience even cheap stuff can temporarily sound OK; be gentle with the volume , and it may work OK for quite a while...
I recently have been upgrading from 5.1 to 7.0 sound (have yet to connect a subwoofer).

Enjoy!
