Well today is Oscars Sunday 2025. So usually we try to make sure that we’ve seen the Best Picture nominees.

Last night we saw “Anora”, nominated for Best Picture, Screenplay, Lead Actress, Supporting Actor.

My impression after watching this movie: How the heck did this movie get all these nominations?

Here’s the plot:
1. Russian boy marries a hooker (how difficult is it to play a hooker and have a lot of sex?)
2. Russian family tries to annul the marriage.
3. The end. And this takes over 2 hours, but feels like 4 hours.

Obviously just because Oscars and the movie reviews rave about a movie doesn’t mean you personally will like it.

I hope Dune Part 2 wins this year’s Oscar. If Dune doesn’t win against all these other movies, the Oscars is stupid.

Also saw “A Complete Unknown”, which I like. If Dune doesn’t win, this movie better win.

It is because of what Conan was joking about. The lead actor in Emila Perez had a very bad blow up on social media which pretty much eliminated its chances at best picture, even though they left it as a nominee. Even the director "disavowed" the actor. It won best picture at the Golden Globes, so it had a good chance and Saldana won best supporting (she was great in it).

I like Anora, but I agree, it pretty much feels like I've seen everything in it before in other, better films. The performances are pretty good though.

The wins were pretty spread out too, a lot of different movies won across the categories. We have yet to see Conclave, Nickel Boys and I had never even heard of I'm Still Here before last night.

They let the one independent team make a commentary about Israel and Gaza, since that is what the film was about, without "playing him off". But that was about it.

I was thinking Adrien Brody might win his 2nd Oscars Best Lead Actor, which came true.

This means "Predators 2010" has the most talented actors of any Predator or Alien movies.

I stopped watching the Oscars years ago. I do like Conan, but that wasn't enough of a draw for me to watch a single minute. I can just check the clips online. Dune 2 being snubbed for Best Director did it for me. Denis V. is being snubbed just like Nolan was for many years, previous to Nolan winning for Oppenheimer. Then, having that pile of trash movie Emilia Perez get nominated for like 13 awards is just an embarrassment. All the credibility the Oscars had finally went out the window, for me. They now have an agenda for Best Picture. It has to meet all these woke points to be nominated. Sorry, it's no longer about "Best" picture when you have an agenda for who can even be nominated. Then I read that a few Oscar voters didn't even watch or finish watching Dune 2 because they lost interest in it. Hahaha. Same thing happened with the Brutalist. Some didn't even finish it. They said "it was too long." Yesh, why even be a voter if you're not going to watch everything?

The Brutalist and Anora are on my list to watch. My 4k copies will be coming this month and maybe April. I watched Conclave on Peacock. Solid movie for about 3/4's of it then totally bombed at the very end. What a horrible way to end the movie. The performances were very good, but that ending was absolutely atrocious. I watched The Substance a couple of weeks ago. Very good movie and very good performances from everyone involved. I have ZERO interest in Wicked. Don't really like musicals. A Complete Unknown looks interesting. I'm not a huge Bob Dylan fan, but I would like to watch it because I really like Timothy Chalamet.

Otherwise, Dune 2 should've swept everything at the Oscars. It's a shame it didn't. Best movie of 2024.

Brutalist is like 3.5hrs, so yeah, it is LONG for a drama. Dune 2 was only 3hrs and it didn't feel like it. Oppenheimer felt like 12 hrs...I could have napped and still got what it was saying.

I do think there is a bit of agenda going on, but that is because it was the opposite the last 90 years. The academy has changed so the voting has changed and it means some films that had no chance before now do get some visibility.

Not intended to take away from the win, but Anora I am not sure should have been in there for best picture. Dune 2 was better than that and Emilia Perez easily.

The thing I hate about the Oscars and most of the awards shows is that it is a bunch of rich people patting other filthy rich people on the back. Absolutely they deserve awards because there are some great films out there, but really, is all that necessary?

Also, if best picture was shot for $6m, then why do they need to spend $200m on Marvel movies that suck?

I rarely agree with Oscar winners so their value is limited. It is a weird thing overall. I did get to see the premier of Airplane! at their theater, tho, that was impressive.

The ONLY reason I watch the Oscars every year is because my wife likes to watch it. Otherwise I would never watch it because I think Oscars is a total joke most of the time.


So when she said she felt tired last night and went to bed early at 8:30, I immediately shut Oscars off and started watching my TV series.

We watched it because she likes to. One cool thing on this year's was Mick Jagger giving the award for music. He was funny and sounded very much all there for 81. He said "They asked Bob Dylan and he said NO. So they said let's get someone younger. *I* am younger than him."

Too bad A Complete Unknown did not win any awards, because the performances were really great.

There was a nice tribute to Gene Hackman, but nothing really about David Lynch.

I've been seeing stuff that they missed a few well known actors in that tribute. Shannen Doherty, Tony Todd, Olivia Hussey, Morgan Spurlock and the just recently passed Michelle Trachtenberg.

Yeah I was pleasantly surprised to see Mick Jagger on Oscars stage. He definitely looks great for 81YR.

I was hoping to see Bob Dylan (83YR) since "A Complete Unknown" was nominated for Best Picture.

We watched A Real Pain. Though it unfolds slowly, it is a solid film. Caulkin is Caulkin and Eisenberg is Eisenberg, but the two work really well together and it has an unexpected honesty to it. Not really a chick flick either, it is more like a "Stand By Me" type of journey. It is not too long, worth it if you are in the mood for something slower, with no explosions and superheroes.

We also watched September 5. This film was good. Even having seen Munich, this story had a lot of interesting background I didn't know about. I was just a kid when this happened, so I didn't really know a lot of details, just that it had happened. Really a lot of great performances in this one.
